VIDEO ROUNDUP: First Trump-Biden Debate Descends Into Mud-Wrestling

Marked by angry interruptions and bitter accusations, the first debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden erupted in contentious exchanges Tuesday night over the coronavirus pandemic, city violence, job losses and how the Supreme Court will shape the future of the nation’s health care.

In what was the most chaotic presidential debate in recent years, somehow fitting for what has been an extraordinarily ugly campaign, the two men frequently talked over each other with Trump interrupting, nearly shouting, so often that Biden eventually snapped at him, “Will you shut up, man?”

“The fact is that everything he’s said so far is simply a lie,” Biden said. “I’m not here to call out his lies. Everybody knows he’s a liar.”

Over and over, Trump tried to control the conversation, interrupting Biden and repeatedly talking over the moderator, Chris Wallace of Fox News. The president tried to deflect tough lines of questioning — whether on his taxes or the pandemic — to deliver broadsides against Biden.

The president drew a lecture from Wallace, who pleaded with both men to stop interrupting. Biden tried to push back against Trump, sometimes looking right at the camera to directly address viewers rather than the president and snapping, “It’s hard to get a word in with this clown.”

But despite his efforts to dominate the discussion, Trump was frequently put on the defensive and tried to sidestep when he was asked if he was willing to condemn white supremacists and paramilitary groups.

“What do you want to call them? Give me a name. Give me a name,” Trump said, before Wallace mentioned the far right, violent group known as the Proud Boys. Trump then pointedly did not condemn the group, instead saying, “Proud Boys, stand back, stand by,but I’ll tell you what, somebody’s got to do something about Antifa and the left because this is not right-wing problem. This is a left wing problem.”

The vitriol exploded into the open when Biden attacked Trump’s handling of the pandemic, saying that the president “waited and waited” to act when the virus reached America’s shores and “still doesn’t have a plan.” Biden told Trump to “get out of your bunker and get out of the sand trap” and go in his golf cart to the Oval Office to come up with a bipartisan plan to save people.

Trump snarled a response, declaring that “I’ll tell you Joe, you could never have done the job that we did. You don’t have it in your blood.”

“I know how to do the job,” was the solemn response from Biden, who served eight years as Barack Obama’s vice president.

The pandemic’s effects were in plain sight, with the candidates’ lecterns spaced far apart, all of the guests in the small crowd tested and the traditional opening handshake scrapped. The men did not shake hands and, while neither candidate wore a mask to take the stage, their families did sport face coverings.

Trump struggled to define his ideas for replacing the Affordable Care Act on health care in the debate’s early moments and defended his nomination of Amy Coney Barrett, declaring that “I was not elected for three years, I’m elected for four years.”

“We won the election. Elections have consequences. We have the Senate. We have the White House and we have a phenomenal nominee, respected by all.”

Trump criticized Biden over the former vice president’s refusal to comment on whether he would try to expand the Supreme Court in retaliation if Barrett is confirmed to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The president also refused anew to embrace the science of climate change.

As the conversation moved to race, Biden accused Trump of walking away from the American promise of equity for all and making a race-based appeal.

“This is a president who has used everything as a dog whistle to try to generate racist hatred, racist division,” Biden said.

Recent months have seen major protests after the deaths of Black people at the hands of police. And Biden said there is systemic racist injustice in this country and while the vast majority of police officers are “decent, honorable men and women” there are “bad apples” and people have to be held accountable.

Trump in turn claimed that Biden’s work on a federal crime bill treated the African American population “about as bad as anybody in this country.” The president pivoted to his hardline focus on those protesting racial injustice and accused Biden of being afraid to use the words “law and order,” out of fear of alienating the left.

“Violence is never appropriate,” Biden said. “Peaceful protest is.”

With just 35 days until the election, and early voting already underway in some states, Biden stepped onto the stage holding leads in the polls — significant in national surveys, close in some battleground states — and looking to expand his support among suburban voters, women and seniors. Surveys show the president has lost significant ground among those groups since 2016, but Biden faces his own questions encouraged by Trump’s withering attacks.

  1. … the same President who during the last campaign cycle used his debate time to brag explicitly about the size of his reproductive organs in from of the whole world? Where is Biden’s respect for the presidency?

  2. Trump kept interrupting Biden and Chris Wallace and appeared to be seething the entire time contorting his face throughout the debate. It was not a good night for Trump as Biden didn’t show any signs of dementia.
Trump seems in need anger management help.

  3. Biden said shut up, man. I don’t know what took him so long. Trump bestiality did not help him. ADL has come out against him telling Proud Boys to stand by.

He’s going to get worse. He always does.
He as to stop watching Fox News. It was so embarrassing.
He is desperate. And will only become more desperate in the coming days.

  4. Sissel613:
Yup. But he did so with the greatest of respect. Since he clearly came into the “debate” with no intention of complying with the rules he had agreed to allowing each candidate to speak for 2 minutes with NO INTERRUPTION when responding to the initial question from the moderator, and kept shouting over the moderator’s efforts to quiet him, Biden simply said “sheket b’vakashah”.

  5. What a world we live in?!?!
One candidate (Hamaivin Yavin) told the other to shut up, called him racist, and a liar, laughed every time the other one spoke, and in general was wildly less presidential than the other candidate (who admittedly interrupted multiple times, but they BOTH did that), and after that Mr “Shut Up” got a glowing rating on CNN.

  6. Why does Biden talk like a shucher in the ghetto? Hey maaan, comeon maaaan. Oh maaaan.

I don’t understand why he still does that after all these years.

  7. I don’t know how other’s feel, but when I turn to a Frum website I expect to read articles written by Frum Yidden with Frum opinions. If I wanted to read or listen to Liberals spew their biased (and often Anti-Semitic) rhetoric I’d turn to CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, AP, etc.
Please stop cutting corners by cutting and pasting news from other websites; especially Liberal ones. I assume you watched the whole debate like I did. Take a pencil and paper, write down what’s said like all other journalists, and give us your own unbiased news articles (as apposed to all the biased News Channels listed above).

  8. Wallace is a sellout. Trump shouldn’t bother with the debates. The American people know what he’s accomplished and what we can look forward to next 4 years.
Biden can’t draw 10 people to a rally. Trump gets tens of thousands. He doesn’t need the debates, it’s just free airtime for Biden.

  9. biden is an empty suit. all these names this ‘gentleman’ callled the President were scripted and rehearsed by his babysitters. he is not capable of handling this type of situation. the experience he does have is because he has been a senator for 180 years, he said so.

  10. Seemed like a real slugfest debate. Why couldn’t Biden condemn Antifa, choosing instead to treat them as a factious group? He also embraced blm, a socialist/marxist, pro-bds movement. Biden also suggested that Trump was anti-Semitic, more misinformation. Could Biden have done any better on Covid-19, of course not. He’s beholden to China, his party uses condemnations like xenophobic to describe actions against communist China. Trump kept the pressure on, and Biden showed some fighting spirit, but stooped to name calling most frequently. Biden’s call for the green deal, global warming initiatives, shutdowns, etc., all cost enormous money he wants taxpayers to increasingly fund over decades. These are government sponsored jobs, after several state governments have demonstrated how poorly they manage finances, proper infrastructure maintenance, law/order, etc. (and then want the Feds to bail their mismanagement out). They waste taxpayer dollars extravagantly on layered lies (Impeachment, Obamacare, etc.).

  11. President Donald Trump was Brilliant.
The other 2 fellows were simply despicable. Biden lied straight through his teeth when talking about his sons & Ukraine:- Lying can NEVER be tolerated, so Biden is Toast.
1st Hispanic poll since debate:- 64/36 for President Donald Trump simply backs up exactly what I am saying.

  12. Trump was unable to condemn white supremacists. The choice is crystal clear, he is a danger to our democracy and our country. The Proud Boys/Neo Nazis are celebrating this morning that’s all one needs to know. How can anyone who believes in democracy support this!!!!

  13. So did Biden have Eye Contact Lens Video Display System to help him talk back???
His eyes look brown on video , not blue as they should!

  14. Jews in Berlin before the war were better off than you today. Don’t repeat the mistake they made and paid for in blood. Unlike back then the gates of Eretz Yisrael are now open. No stiff neck

  15. This debate was an embarrassment to the American people. Such lowlives are our presidential candidates? Their prustkeit is stomach churning and they were two shpitz golems (נכנס לתוך דברי חבירו) with Trump outdoing Biden on that score. Trump is the lesser of two evils but this is very sad, indeed. I was hoping that Biden’s proven senility would be on display but Hashem was in his corner and it didn’t happen. If you have never davened hard enough for Moshiach, now’s the time. We’re all at a low, not just these two clowns, and need a yeshua at every level.

  16. “When I turn to a Frum website I expect to read articles written by Frum Yidden with Frum opinions”

If you feel that positive and supportive comments about the vulgar, bullying racist incumbent are “frum opinions” than go elsewhere for your apikorsus.

  17. Here is the answer.
To those liberal secularist who want Trump to condemn the white supremacy. They are not the treat. It’s Antifa and BLM that burnt hand looted jewish communities in LA and elsewhere. In fact it was Trump who deported the last real Nazi out of America.
Second when Biden claims that riots help Trump and Trump likes that. Well why dont the democratic mayors and governors stop the riots. But no they nod and tell them it’s ok. They tie the hands of the police. Trump will win big. I have been collecting info. Most orthodox Jews support Trump,so do The Amish and Spanish in Florida. Ad upper west side ex liberals. It looks landslide.
