WATCH: HaRav Yisroel Reisman Describes Threat To NYS Chinuch As DRACONIAN, OUTRAGEOUS, & IMMEDIATE

As YWN has been reporting, New York State is taking steps towards stricter enforcement of its education requirements on yeshiva elementary schools.

In line with recently released NYS Education Department guidelines, all yeshiva elementary schools must teach a ‘substantially equivalent education’ to public schools, with a minimum of six hours of secular studies daily.

The new regulations leave little flexibility for what yeshiva elementary schools may teach.

In a candid video released today by Agudas Yisroel, HaRav Yisroel Reisman, Mora D’asra of Agudath Israel of Madison and Rosh Yeshiva of Torah Vodaath delivers a warning to Klal Yisroel about the danger facing our time-tested system of Chinuch. Warning that this will impact yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs across New York State, Rabbi Reisman calls the new Substantial Equivalency guidelines, “Draconian, outrageous, and immediate.”

Watch this important video to see how this new gezeirah can affect your child, grandchild, nephew or niece.

  1. I am not agudah, ou or youg israel – just a layman! But i can think mass rally men women and children in nyc and maybe albany including the chassidis lady judge among other judges and frum doctors and lawyers and cpas and professors at. Dais proclaiming this is not about secular skills as we clearly have much success! Maybe even former prrsidential candidate senator lieberman. That we are over a million in new york and outstanding ny citizens for many decades! That in our school students dont have anywhere near ths sexual harrassment by students or gun violence as in public schools so maybe they shoould learn from us! That this is freedom of religoun and the feds may need to be brought in as they were in souyh in 1960s. That ny state dare not now join the ranks of places that caused us expulsion! It would bring disaster upon ny itself! Especially nyc! Is thisdue to the democratic party!? Jewish rights and civil rights groups and catholic and moslem schools shoud join in! When shall we start!?!

  2. Every time I read a new article regarding New York State, it’s Board of Education and these new regulations and requirements they are bulldozing onto the Yeshivas I walk away with the same questions – What’s really going on here? What is the motivation and what is the true outcome they are hoping to achieve?

Things don’t make sense. Things aren’t adding up. What exactly is the problem the State and Board of Education are having with the faith based education children are receiving in the Yeshivas? Yeshiva educated children consistently out score their public school counterparts on standardized testing so it can’t be that. Is it the English? Everybody should take a deep breath. Language is a living thing, it is fluid and constantly evolving. Grammar is merely someone or some entity’s arbitrary edict on how a sentence or a thought should sound and look. If you can successfully communicate your thoughts so as to be understood in the English language then you’ve achieved literacy. The more important question is this.. Are the children being adequately prepared to make a successful life in the communities in which they will grow up, live and make their present and future lives? I think they are. They are being taught that they are a part of something far greater than the sum total of their own personal selves and I can’t help but think and be uneasy in the feeling that therein lies the State and it’s Board of Education true motives.

The new measures are sufficiently draconian in nature and manner that they seem almost custom designed to fail. Logic then demands the question of who stands to gain the most by the dismantling of the Yeshiva Private School system. It’s not the children, that’s for sure. I’m not sure I like the direction of the paths in which lies the true answer of who stands to gain the most by the doing away with a faith based of Torah values system of education. In fact, I know I don’t like it. It’s disturbing and I don’t like it at all. Never again.

  3. I have a suggestion, why don’t the American Jews organize as a community and MOVE to Eretz Yisrael where Gd has commanded us to live. You can help improve the atmosphere of kedusha here in Eretz ha Kodesh. Time to come home.

  4. No different than Hitler who saw us all as one. I really did not completely understand this issue until I watched this video thank you for posting it. However at the same time Rabbi Reisman speaks of the problem and that Achdis is the solution but once we are together Bachdus how to we proceed to solve this problem. It sounds almost as if they are trying to deny us our religious right as Jews who want to give our children a Jewish education. I am all for secular education and feel that to deny your children of a secular education is wrong however there must be a happy medium. What is our next move?

  5. We have very similar problems here in the UK at the moment! Truly a message from H-shem, takes a godol to interpret the reason for it!

  6. Why don’t the Aguda, OU, RCA, and all other Orthodox organization meet urgently to plan as strategy, such as taking the state education department to court.
Beside davening, which we must/will do, there isn’t much else that individuals can do.

  7. So let’s finally take the wake up call from Hashem.

TESHUVA IN THE MIDST OF ACHDUS TOG.
TESHUVA IN THE MIDST OF ACHDUS TOG.
TESHUVA IN THE MIDST OF ACHDUS TOG.

must I say more? Can we expect a miracle from Hashem if we don’t do our hishtadlus in teshuva?

  8. Don’t kid yourselves. Meetings And planning strategies are already being worked out behind the scenes.

They’re trying to get the public on board for when the fundraising, email campaigns and perhaps protests begin.
I’m not being cynical, our children’s future Yiddishkeit is at stake, but the cost of legal fights will be astronomical, and money is the name of the game.

  9. Benk: Funny you should bring them up. I was thinking of posting that I doubt Arabella Kushner’s school (I know it’s in DC) meets the recently enacted NYS minimum PS equivalency standards, but opted not to, as we’re not talking Washington here and I didn’t want to “mish a kasha”. You just gave me a way in… This is another reason to get them to work with us on this issue, but I’m not holding my breath.
