New York State to Consider Authorizing Early Voting

New York lawmakers are poised to decide whether to allow early voting in an effort to drive up election turnout.

The Senate and Assembly plan to vote on the measure and other changes to voting rules on Monday, the first full day of the 2019 session.

Most states already allow advance voting, but the idea has long been stalled in the Legislature. Now, with Democrats in control of both chambers, supporters say they expect the measure to pass.

Under the legislation, voters could cast a ballot up to 10 days before an election.

Lawmakers will also vote on a proposed constitutional amendment that, if approved by voters, would allow voters to register on Election Day.
