Israeli Cell Companies Bracing For Erev Pesach SMS Messages

yw text1.jpgPele-Phone Communications Ltd. expects 20 million SMS and MMS messages will be sent via all the cellular operators on Erev Pesach this year.

Eight million SMS and 50,000 MMS messages are sent every day, and the rate is expected to surge before Yom Tov.

SMS and MMS messages for Rosh Hashana last year generated an estimated NIS 6-7 million altogether for Israel’s four cellular operators. The number of SMS and MMS messages was more than 200% above the daily average on Rosh Hashana 2007.

Some cellular operators faced traffic jams on Rosh Hashana last year, and many messages arrived hours late, if at all.

  1. Did I hear right, ON ROSH HASHANA 200% more messages were sent. Are you indicating that people were mechalel the yom hadin!!?? I’ll have to assume it must have been by the Christain tourists that suddenly had an urge to go textmania. By the way, according to the American Journal of Physcology, over-texting is a mental disorder! (even though i am a victim!)

  2. tx 4 da gr8 article! 🙂

Must Hock- I wondered about the Rosh Hashana bit too, but decided it was an automatic rollover surge as per “Some cellular operators faced traffic jams on Rosh Hashana last year, and many messages arrived hours late, if at all.” Hashem yivoreich ess Amo bashalom.

  3. Mi Ke’Amcha Yisrael!

I, for one, think its absolutely wonderful that there’s such an amazing effort adn people take the time out of their very busy Yom-Tov preparations to wish your family & friends a Gut Yom-Tov. Talking OR texting.

Bench Kvetcher- Im texting YOU 😉 -and every Yid on here – a Chag Kasher V’shameach!

  4. Hopefully the number of “Erev Pesach SMS Messages” will be lower this year since Erev Pesach falls on Shabbos 🙂

  5. Dear #6 (Shmily), I hate that the whole text messaging thing is because everybody is lazy to make a friendly phone call, that’s all. It became the unfriendly way to be friendly, if you have a quick question call a person its much more appreciated.

  6. Borninthebronx:
arent you sposed to be the mathwiz of bronx science??? I’m surprised you didnt figure out that there will be 2x’s as many texts for shabbos AND yomtov!

  7. finallythetruth: on a regular friday most people dont send too many messages, however the backlog in this case is clearly solely from YOM TOV (keep guessing!!)

  8. why is this bad? rather its amazing! some people you wouldn’t call to say have a chag kosher vsameach, but texting it is different. and you can text it to your whole contact list. you never know whose day you just made!!

and a chag kasher vsameach to all!!!!!!

  9. must_hock: im just wondering a few things: when did you ever read the american jounal of psychology??? I should have known you didnt when you spelled psychology wrong!!!
