BORUCH DAYAN HA’EMMES: Body Of Rabbi Reuven Bauman Z”L Has Been Found By Misaskim Boat

Highly credible sources have just confirmed to YWN that the body of Rav Reuven Bauman Z”L who heroically jumped into the ocean to save a student, has been found. He was located at around 1:00PM by a boat of volunteers from Misaskim of Maryland searching off the coast of North Carolina, and positively identified by authorities. The family was notified moments ago of the sad news.

The tragic story united Klal Yisroel, as Jews around the globe Davened, gave Tzedakah, and learned – first for a miracle of finding him alive, and then for the miracle of locating his body so he can be brought to proper Kevuras Yisroel.

As YWN had reported earlier, dozens of volunteers traveled hundreds of miles to search all day Sunday, with boats, jet skies, and helicopters.

Yossi Margareten, Coordinator of Chaveirim of Rockland along with the members of the Achiezer Organization had been coordinating the search, and worked tirelessly all day and night since Rabbi Bauman was swept out to sea last Tuesday.

The Virginia Beach Police and Virginia Beach Fire Department had searched continuously since he had gone missing, and were assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard last week for two days.

Among the organizations that assisted in the search were Achiezer, Rockland Chaveirim,  Misaskim of Maryland, Baltimore Shomrim, Hatzolah Air, Lakewood Chaveirim, Misaskim of Greater Washington, NY Hatzolah, COMSAR and others.

Hundreds of civilian assisted from Norfolk, Savana Georgia and other communities.

Rabbi Bauman, 35-years-old, was at the beach at False Cape State Park last Tuesday with around 20 campers from a local day camp when a 13-year-old student was caught in a sudden rip current. Rabbi Bauman immediately entered the water to save the boy who was able to make it out of the water. Unfortunately, Rabbi Bauman was swept out to sea and has not been seen since.

Rabbi Reuven Bauman was a Rebbi at Yeshiva Toras Chaim in Norfolk Virginia.

He leaves behind a wife and 5 children.

Levaya details will be published when they become available to us.

Boruch Dayan HaEmmes…

A Charidy campaign has been set up for the family.

  3. Baruch Fayan HaEmmes.
Thank you to all the searchers, paid and volunteer, who united together to bring closure to Reb Reuvains family.

  4. Baruch Dayan HaEmes. And Baruch Hashem that his wife will not be left an aguna. They should have a nechama.

    Mi Kiamcha Yisroel.
How proud I am to be part of such a special nation.
The time, resources and money that was put into this search.
The dedication of tens of volunteers, working and worrying round the clock for one of our Holy Brothers.
The Achdus of Klal Yisroel uniting in Tefillah for a closure to this heartrending tradgedy.
Rabbi Bauman was a true hero.
We know that the Gemara states that the Melamed Dardiky; teachers of children; sit under the Kisei HaKavod.
Rabbi Bauman was fortunate to be a Rebbi and to Heroically give up his life in an extreme act of kindness.
May the family and Klal Yisroel have a Nechama, and May we greet Moshiach speedily in our days.

  6. Rabbi Reuven Bauman published a book last year. It should be a zechus for him.
This is the email he sent.

My first book has just been published, b’h, the website is below. It is a biography of HaRav Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt’l written in a kid’s novel form. It is meant to teach middos in a practical way, from the perspective of a young boy who’s dealing with typical issues and solves them through lessons learned from R’ Yaakov.

  7. Baruch dayan ha’emes. As horrible and unspeakable that this tragedy is, my we never know, the silver lining is that the body can be brought for Kevurah and his wife is not an agunah.
Interestingly, Mis’askim of Maryland was founded just a few short months ago, founded by the children of Rav Mendel Friedman, a beloved and legendary Mechanech and principal of the Beis Ya’akov of Baltimore elementary school. It is worthy and certainly not coincidental that this organization, founded l’illui nishmas such a beloved mechanech, should aid in bringing the body of another beloved mechanech to rest.

  8. Now we see the full wisdom in the Pesak of Rav Dovid Feinstein shlita and Rav Yisroel Mantel shlita:- in NO Schiwoh, until today’s tragic clarity. Rav Reuven Bauman ZTKLLH’H and Yoni Netanyohu HY’D who are both Martyrs of the highest magnitude, both departing this world in a heroic act of saving fellow Jews, both share same יארצייט of ו” תמוז

  10. Not sure if you know, so many Jews from other states traveled to join the search team, resulting in achdut, tzedaka, more Tefillot, and great Kiddush Hashem.

Keep in mind, we “suddenly” lost 2 YOUNG leaders (Rabbi Bauman & Rabbi Cunin) less then a week from each other and now, as a Jewish nation, we left with 2 widows and 11 orphans in total to take care of, Lo Aleinu.

Let’s please try to bring unity in zechut of these 2 great leaders and may it bring comfort to the family.

Why is it, when it comes to tragedies, no matter what, it is usually the only time we are in Achdus? If things were going so well for us, and this never happened, do you still think Sepharadim, Ashkenazim, Mizrahim, and Chassidim will still be united like this, hug one another, support one another like this, or will we still continue to judge one another till today?

I wish the love and support we all did regardless of one’s nationality, frumkeit, education level, etc, would be always be strong like we had for Rabbi Bauman and Rabbi Cunin HaShalom.

With that said, my heart cries for those very two reasons.

Let us please rectify Tisha B’av. It came too early.

  11. THE ALTER USED TO SAY:
“I DONT TELL REBBEIM ABOUT THIER REWARD IN OLAM HABAH, BEC IF THEY WOULD HEAR HOW GREAT IT IS THEY WOULDN’T BE AFRAID TO DO AN AVEIRAH”…….REB RUVEIN….GO AND ENJOY YOUR REAL MENUCHA IN THE RAYS OF THE SHECHINAH &
DONT WORRY ABOUT YOUR CHILDREN,YOU TOOK CARE OF HASHEMS CHILDREN IN THE GREATEST WAYS….HE WILL TAKE CARE OF YOURS…
    WE WILL MISS YOU.

  12. To “Ambituous”:
Perhaps it would be a zechus to the niftarim you mentioned to be more “ambitious” in avoiding slandering the entire Klal Yisrael as you did in your post.

There are so many organizations and individuals in Klal Yisrael who help other people in Klal Yisrael, regardless of from which “sect” is the helper and from which is the one being helped. For example, Tomchei Shabbos, Hatzolah, Misaskim, etc.

  13. I hope that R’ Bauman’s almana will receive royalties from his book’s sales. If she does and people know about this, I’m sure many people will be extra-motivated to buy what seems like a really wonderful book. Maybe YWN can check about the royalties, and assuming the family receives something would be willing to put up a free ad for the book.

  14. Are there lessons to be learned from this tragedy that might help prevent future ones, R”l? Safety rules that could have been followed and that could now be publicized as an ilui neshomo for him. Does anyone know his full name and his father’s name for learning Mishnayos?

  15. M, as with most assets or investments, if there was no legal directive or legal will then it will likely be a legal battle to receive the royalties. Lehavdil, there are famous American Authors who have been deceased for decades/centuries, and the royalties were arranged to be designated for certain charities, or crazy enough their dogs and cats. Hopefully arrangements were made in advance, but if not then perhaps they can try it in court.
