Famous Jewish New York City Opthamologist Killed in Crash; Had Major Office In Flatbush


YWN is sad to report the untimely death of Dr. Mark Lebowitz who was killed in an auto accident on Monday morning.

Dr. Lebowitz had a large practice in Brooklyn as well as being in charge of the Brooklyn Eye Surgery Center on Avenue J in Flatbush, with 35 ophthalmologists. He was responsible for running it.

Dr. Avishai Neuman, an anesthesiologist, who knew him well, tells YWN, “He was a highly decorated ophthalmologist in terms of his skills.  Mark was a true pokayach ivrim – he restored people’s vision – after cataract surgeries, and other issues – he is there to make sure that they see.”

Dr. Neuman continues, “He was ranked at the top of his field. He was a very down-to-earth and approachable person. He was a true humble giant – a real mensch.”

The funeral is set for Thursday. He has two children, Alex who is in the field of finance, and Emily who just started her internship in dermatology. Dr. Lebowitz’s wife was also injured in the accident.

Dr. Lebowitz was driving his 2019 McLaren westbound on Sunrise Highway when the vehicle veered off the highway in Bohemia in Suffolk County.

Police said that the accident happened at approximately 6:45 a.m. on Monday, July 22nd.

Dr. Lebowitz was pronounced dead at the scene r”l. His wife, Dr. Diane Berson-Lebowitz, 61, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

  1. I hope the first person who gives the mais greif for a 2019 McLaren is reminded of the Jaguar convertible and Rev Yaakov. Hashem yerachem. Sounds like a great guy.

  2. The jag at the time of the Reb Yaakov story likely had a similar power to weight ratio,which is a far more determinative specification for actual capabilities. If your implication is that this modern mclaren was somehow more dangerous than a car Reb Yaakov “allowed” and rode in, then you need to look into the history of Jaguar sports cars a little more.
