British Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced Tuesday that he is resigning from Parliament and will seek reelection in a special election, saying he wants voters—not what he called “the establishment”—to decide his political future.
Farage’s decision comes as he faces an investigation over allegations that he failed to disclose gifts and donations received before entering Parliament in 2024.
Among the donations under review is a reported £5 million gift from billionaire Christopher Harborne, as well as additional contributions from George Cottrell. Farage has denied any wrongdoing, insisting the funds were received legally and that he was under no obligation to report them at the time.
Earlier in the day, Farage clashed with a Sky News reporter over the investigation, accusing the media of targeting both him and his family.
In a subsequent statement, Farage accused the media and Britain’s political establishment of trying to undermine the growing support for Reform UK. He described the upcoming by-election as “the people versus the establishment” and said he intends to run again to continue advancing his party’s political agenda.

This assumes that the government will cooperate with his resignation. It doesn’t have to. Members of Parliament CAN’T resign. What they do is apply for a job with the government; there are several jobs that involve no duties and come with no pay, but they are technically government jobs, and having one makes a person ineligible to sit in Parliament, so they are removed.
Usually the government grants these jobs as a matter of course; but no law says it has to. If it doesn’t want an MP to resign it can simply refuse to “hire” him, and he is stuck in Parliament until the next election. In this case, with all the other parties saying they will refuse to compete in such a joke of a by-election, the government can simply refuse to let him resign.
