QatarEnergy purchased 33 spot liquefied natural gas cargoes from the United States this year as it sought to maintain deliveries to Asian customers after the war with Iran halted Qatari exports through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters.
The shipments, valued at an estimated $1 billion, were purchased directly from U.S. exporter Venture Global LNG and from several of its customers. The cargoes are being delivered to South Korea, Taiwan, Bangladesh, India and Japan.
The purchases are equivalent to roughly one-third of Qatar’s monthly LNG exports before the conflict. Sources said QatarEnergy moved quickly to secure replacement supplies and protect its long-standing reputation as a dependable global energy supplier.
One source described the purchases as “a gesture of good faith,” while another said the company wanted to demonstrate its commitment to supporting customers despite the disruption to Qatari exports.
