What initially appeared to be a routine motor vehicle accident Wednesday evening has now become the focus of an NYPD investigation after newly reviewed surveillance footage appears to expose a suspected “crash-for-cash” insurance scam.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Quentin Road and East 31st Street, where a teenage driver operating a minivan was involved in a collision with another vehicle.

Immediately following the crash, the occupants of the other vehicle claimed the teenager had caused the collision. EMS responded to the scene, and the occupants were transported to a local hospital after complaining of injuries. A police report was filed, and the incident appeared to be a typical traffic accident.

However, Flatbush Shomrim Coordinator Tzvi Weill tells YWN that the case took a dramatic turn on Thursday when investigators reviewed footage from a security camera installed by Flatbush Shomrim overlooking the intersection.

According to Weill, the video appears to show the teenage driver coming to a complete stop at the stop sign before proceeding into the intersection, while the other vehicle intentionally drove into the minivan in what investigators now suspect was a staged collision designed to support a fraudulent insurance claim.

The surveillance footage has been turned over to the NYPD, and investigators are now working to identify and locate those involved as the investigation continues.

Weill urged motorists to protect themselves by installing dash cameras, noting that innocent drivers can easily become victims of staged crashes and false claims. He added that residents and business owners interested in expanding security camera coverage at neighborhood intersections are encouraged to contact Flatbush Shomrim, whose camera network played a key role in uncovering this suspected scheme.
