Three children were seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after suffering severe electrocution from high-voltage electrical wires at Camp Shopron on Route 42 in Fallsburg.
The frightening incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. when the children, believed to be between the ages of 9 and 13, were playing near a wooded area of the camp. Preliminary information indicates they came into contact with high-voltage power lines—believed to carry approximately 35,000 volts—that were either brought down overnight or had fallen earlier without being noticed.
Given the extremely high voltage involved, it is nothing short of a miracle that the children were not killed instantly.
A massive emergency response was launched, with dozens of Catskills Hatzolah EMTs and paramedics rushing to the scene, joined by additional emergency personnel. Catskills Hatzolah Chief Yidel Feig responded to coordinate the large-scale operation.
Three medical helicopters landed near the camp and airlifted all three victims to Westchester Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center.
Bichasdei Hashem, all three children were reported to be breathing on their own when they were transported, despite suffering severe electrical injuries.
Utility crews and emergency officials remained on the scene to secure the area and investigate how the live wires ended up on the ground.
