The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party’s landslide victory in Sunday’s state election in Saxony-Anhalt has raised alarm among Jewish organizations in the country.

The result marks the first time since the end of World War II in 1945 that a far-right party has won a German state election.

Israel’s ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, expressed concern over the rise of extremist parties on both sides of the country’s political spectrum.

“I fear for Jewish life here, which is under a real threat,” Prosor said. “The far-right AfD party is breaking records of support at the ballot box, while the far-left Die Linke party is distributing incitement materials in the heart of Berlin calling for violence against Jews and Israelis under the guise of ‘legitimate political discourse.’”

“This is a real alarm. Actions are needed, not just words, against the rampant incitement against Jews.”
