A mysterious Bitcoin holder has moved 600 coins worth nearly $48 million for the first time in more than 16 years, drawing attention across the cryptocurrency market.

The Bitcoin was originally mined in March 2010, during the cryptocurrency’s earliest days, and had remained untouched ever since. The coins were held across 12 separate addresses, each containing 50 Bitcoin — the mining reward for successfully producing a block at the time.

The age of the coins immediately fueled speculation that they could be connected to Bitcoin’s mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, who was still active at the time. However, an analysis by Whale Alert found no evidence linking the Bitcoin to mining activity attributed to Nakamoto.

The 600 Bitcoin were transferred to new addresses rather than directly to a known cryptocurrency exchange, meaning there is currently no indication that the owner intends to sell them. The transfers could instead represent a move to new wallets or a change in how the assets are being stored.

The unusual transaction offers a glimpse back into Bitcoin’s earliest era, when the cryptocurrency could still be mined using an ordinary computer and miners received 50 Bitcoin for every block they successfully produced.

More than 16 years later, someone who held onto those coins since 2010 has suddenly begun moving them — with their stash now valued at nearly $48 million.
