Eleven people suffered mild to moderate breathing difficulties following an ammonia gas leak at an industrial complex in Aqaba, Jordan, on Sunday.
Some of those affected were treated at a local clinic inside the complex, while others were evacuated to a hospital for further medical care.
Nidal Al-Awaran, the commissioner for environmental and public safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, said the incident occurred during maintenance work on a pump or an older pressure unit.
According to Al-Awaran, ammonia gas that had accumulated inside the unit leaked during the work. Civil defense forces and Jordanian security agencies were dispatched to the site to contain the leak and assist those affected.
Technical inspections carried out afterward confirmed that the situation had been brought fully under control.
