Saudi Arabia has discovered approximately 110 million tons of raw material containing concentrations of uranium in the Medina region, Reuters reports. The kingdom’s energy minister announced the discovery Monday at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s General Conference in Vienna.
The announcement, also carried by Saudi state television, represents a potentially significant development for the kingdom’s domestic mineral and energy resources.
Saudi Arabia has been pursuing broader nuclear-energy ambitions while seeking to diversify its energy sector, making the discovery particularly noteworthy as Riyadh considers its future nuclear capabilities.
Saudi officials did not immediately specify the concentration of uranium contained in the material or how much could ultimately be commercially recovered and processed.
