ANTISEMITISM IN CANADA: Mezuzos Smashed at University Dorms on Rosh Hashanah

Mezuzos affixed to the doors of Jewish students were smashed and torn down at Wilfrid Laurier University dormitories in Waterloo, Ontario, during Rosh Hashanah.

The university confirmed the vandalism and said extensive damage was discovered throughout several dormitory hallways. Campus security has launched an investigation, while affected students are receiving assistance from university housing staff.

Hillel Ontario and StandWithUs Canada condemned the incident in a joint statement, calling it antisemitic hatred directed at Jewish students “in the place they call home on campus.”

The organizations said the timing made the attack especially painful, noting that Jewish students should have been able to celebrate the beginning of the new year proudly but were instead targeted with “vile hatred.”

Hillel representatives contacted university administrators following the incident and demanded zero tolerance for antisemitism on campus.

Hillel Ontario CEO Jay Solomon warned that the vandalism was not an isolated incident, but part of an escalating pattern of hostility toward Jewish students across Ontario and Canada since October 7.

“This situation cannot continue,” Solomon said. “Every institution of higher education has an obligation to protect Jewish safety. We call on all schools to enforce their policies and hold perpetrators accountable quickly and transparently.”
