The U.S. military destroyed two Iranian boats after IRGC forces attempted to seize an unmanned U.S. Navy surface vessel patrolling the Strait of Hormuz, in another direct confrontation between American and Iranian forces.
An American drone detected the attempted seizure and fired two missiles at the boats, killing most of those aboard, U.S. officials told Axios. CENTCOM confirmed that Iranian small boats unsuccessfully attempted to take control of the Navy vessel.
The unmanned vessel remained under American control following the confrontation. The incident comes as U.S. forces maintain extensive operations around Hormuz to protect commercial traffic and keep mine-cleared sections of the shipping route open.
Iranian media offered a different account, claiming American drones attacked two fishing boats near Kargan and Larak Island. Iranian reports said several fishermen were missing and search-and-rescue operations were underway.
