German police are investigating a death threat sent to prominent Jewish leader and Holocaust survivor Charlotte Knobloch that explicitly referenced the far-right Alternative for Germany party’s recent election success.
Knobloch, 93, received the threatening message after the AfD recorded significant gains in local elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. The message referenced the party’s results and warned her that her “time” would come, according to reports Tuesday.
Knobloch survived the Holocaust as a child after a Catholic family hid her in Bavaria and later became one of Germany’s most prominent Jewish communal figures. She currently serves as president of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria and has repeatedly warned about rising antisemitism and extremism in Germany.
Munich police opened an investigation into the threat. The incident comes amid continuing concern among German Jewish leaders over antisemitic attacks and the increasingly hostile political climate facing the country’s Jewish community.
