Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun called on countries Wednesday to avoid provocative actions as he opened the Beijing Xiangshan Forum, one of China’s most prominent international defense and security gatherings, according to Reuters.

Dong also warned against what he described as a resurgence of regressive historical trends, remarks likely to be interpreted in the context of China’s longstanding disputes with Japan.

His comments came as military tensions remain elevated across several parts of Asia and as Beijing continues expanding its diplomatic and military influence.

The Xiangshan Forum brings defense and security officials from numerous countries to Beijing for discussions covering international security, military relations and regional disputes.

Dong used his opening remarks to call for restraint and cooperation while criticizing actions Beijing views as destabilizing.
