Seven Peleg Deserters Released From IDF Prison 6

Seven deserters, who were imprisoned in IDF Prison 6, were released Sunday morning 16 Cheshvan after serving days in the military court for failing to appear at the recruitment centers.

In the early hours Sunday, many of their friends and family members arrived at Prison 6 in Atlit to welcome the seven.

At first, six of the seven were released. The seventh prisoner was refused by the prison commander after he had engraved the slogan of the demonstrations: “We shall die and we will not enlist.” But after a discussion between the lawyers and the commander, he was cleared after other of his friends in prison said they were part of engraving it on the wall. Friends and family greeted them with singing and dancing.

Peleg talmid Meir Kaplinsky, among those released from Prison 6 last week, hosted an oneg Shabbos in his home in the Ramot area of Jerusalem on Shabbos, attended by some of his colleagues who were also released.

Kikar Shabbos News reports that HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Kaplan, Mashgiach Yeshivas Chevron Givat Mordechai attended the oneg Shabbos and addressed the participants on the “gezeira” of serving in the IDF. Also present, spending Shabbos in the community, was HaGaon HaRav Mintzer, one of the heads of Yeshivas Hadera.

  1. The medinah would be well advised to rely on carrots (i.e. money, benefits, preferences) rather than a stick (jail) to recruit soldiers. Simply ignoring hareidim who refuse to support the medinah is better than giving them publicity. It hardly helps the medinah to advertise to the world that many of the intellectual elite of traditional Judaism consider the zionist endeavor to be folly and are refusing to participate in the war against the Palestinian Arabs.

  2. JLyacov613: you feel that army service should be used as a punishment, ‘eh? Like the Cantonists in the Tzar’s army 150 years ago? Fortunately, the army is a little smarter. They know that you cannot force anyone to be a soldier against their will. All they can do is imprison them. And we see how well that works. Do you really think such “deserters” are wanted or needed by the IDF?

  3. american_yerushalmi : If they desert from the IDF, they should be found and then put into prison for life.
This will be a good lesson for all those so called yeshiva students to do as the law says.
