Not A Shocker: Murders Soar In Cities With “Defunded” Police Departments

Major US cities that “defunded” their police departments last year in response to the demands of protesters have suffered dramatic surges in murders and other violent crimes, Fox News reported last week.

The cities include Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York City, Portland, Ore., and Austin, Texas, all of which transferred police funds to social services programs this past year.

Murders in Minneapolis rose 46% since the May death of George Floyd and total crime increased by 22%. The increase followed a shift of about $8 million from the police department toward violence prevention and other programs.

In Portland, homicides surged by 270.6% since July 2020, when police budgets were cut by almost $16 million from the police budget. The past year, 2020, was the deadliest in the city in over 25 years. Fortunately, city officials did not heed the protesters’ demand for cutting the budget by $50 million.

In New York City, murders were up by 11.8% as of March 21. In July, the New York City Council voted to transfer $1 billion away from the NYPD’s budget to educational and social services.

  1. The sole loud & clear message emanating from this:-
    1) November 8th, 2022:- Senate & Congress absolutely must be flipped exceedingly Red.
    2) November 5th, 2024:- President Donald Trump must be reelected to office, without this 3rd victory being stolen as was his 2nd victory.

I agree that Congress must be flipped in 2022. I also agree that either Trump or a similarly effective president must be elected in 2024.
Here’s where I disagree. Stop harping on 2020. That’s why we lost Georgia and the Senate. Focus on 2022 and 2024.

  3. The data cited in this article is too limited to support the conclusion that the funding transfers caused the increases in murder rates.
