FLASHBACK: Hagon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Calls On Yeshivos To Fire Arabs [YWN Article From 2008]

kannThe following appeared on YWN on March 16, 2008:

Hagon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita has called on Yeshivos to fire Arab employees, stemming from the murderous attack in Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva.

Apparently, Rabbonim from a local Bnei Brak Yeshiva had concerns after learning the Merkaz HaRav terrorist was a Jerusalem resident, and they asked Rav Kanievsky regarding an elderly Arab employee in their yeshiva, stating he has worked there for many years. The rabbis added they do not fear the elderly employee is tied to terrorist activities, but nevertheless feel compelled to seek Rav Kanievsky’s ruling on such a serious matter.

The rabbi expressed surprise upon hearing Arabs are employed in the Jewish schools, adding there are many Jews seeking employment and in need of Parnassah. When Rav Kanievsky was asked if his ruling should be publicized, he stated “certainly” and now, after his ruling is public knowledge, hundreds of Yeshivos around the country are expected to follow his decision.

  1. finally after all the murders carried out by arab employees! Our son’s yeshiva just went to this policy today and will be increasing other security measures. Our neighborhood grocery already has this policy. I can worry a little less (but will continue to daven!)
    Thank-you
    Rav Kavievsky!

  2. I am sorry to say that many don’t want to support workers of yeshivas, school, shul on a normal JEWISH STAND. I for one also see Hashem’s Brochos when dealing with Yidden

  3. Let’s hope that these angry fired Arab employees don’t react, if yes it’s big trouble because they know the insides of the buildings inside out. But I’m sure that if it comes from a tzadik like r’ chaim I’m sure there’s a siyaato dishmayo with his words!!

  4. #6 Arabs respond to a firing, as they do to a burned Pizza… with hatred towards JEWS. Nothing we do will change an animal in a human guise. Making ‘good will’ gestures, releasing prisoners, increasing hrs on Har Habayis, nothing makes a difference when your goal is to be a martyr for the sake of Jerusalem.

  5. #6 the vast vast majority of Arabs are employed by Jews. Fire 100,000 Arabs in Jerusalem, and they have a far bigger problem than you can imagine.

If it is made known in a public way that we will not hire arabs until all public leaders come out against violence, all anti Israeli TV shows are removed from TV. Then we can talk.

  6. It’s not clear from the article if they came to ask Reb Chaim on their own, or if he came out with a statement that all Arabs should be fired and they came to ask about their specific case.
We are told that Reb Chaim “expressed surprise” about Arabs
being employed in mosdos, and then “was asked if his ruling
    should be publicized.”
It hardly seems clear that there WAS any ruling. (Perhaps the fault lies with the writer of the article.)

  7. Back in 2008, the following appeared on an anti-Zionist website.
    ———–
I wrote to Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky the following letter: “To the honor of the Rav shlita. I heard that the Rav paskened that yeshivos may not employ Arab workers because of the danger, and that he added, “We are at war with them.” I want to ask if what I heard is true. And if it is, I ask: How is it possible to say that we are at war with the Arabs? We, Jews who keep Torah and mitzvos, talmidim of the gedolim such as the Chazon Ish zt”l and the Brisker Rav zt”l, did not establish the state, and we are not at war with any nation in the world. The Zionists are the ones who aroused the Arabs’ anger, to the point where they murder Jews, r”l. And therefore, it seems, it would have been more accurate to say that the Zionists are at war with the Arabs, and since the Arabs do not distinguish between Zionist Jews and non-Zionist Jews, therefore we must be careful and not be soicher. And if I have erred, may the Rav forgive me and place me on the true path.”
Today I received his reply, four words: “Ani lo amarti kein” I did not say that.

Now, while the YWN article, unlike articles from other sources, did not include the line about war, it is unclear
what he “did not say,” as the same website acknowledged shortly afterward:
    —-
The cryptic answer leaves it unclear exactly what the rabbi said and what he did not say. However, it is now clear that his words were falsified by the Zionist media, and one can no longer believe any of the story with certainty.

These guys do seem kind of nuts, but they’ve got a point.
