IDF Chief Eizenkott Expected To Reduce Azariya’s Sentence

IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-General Gadi Eizenkott is expected to reduce the sentence of former soldier Elor Azariya, who was convicted of manslaughter. Rather than file another appeal with the High Court of Justice, Azariya’s lawyer sent a letter to Eizenkott asking for merch, expressing remorse for his actions. He is hoping to have his 18-month sentence reduced.

Channel 2 News reports that Eizenkott will be reviewing the case soon, at which time he is expected to reduce the sentence, but it is unlikely that he will permit Azariya to return home without serving a portion of the sentence. He is however expected to reduce the sentence by a number of months.

The Military Appeals Court rejected the appeal and the 18-month jail term remains. Azariya planned to take his case to the High Court but then realized for as long as it awaits adjudication, the IDF Chief cannot weigh in. Hence, the decision was made to withdraw the appeal to the High Court and submit Elor’s letter to Chief Eizenkott in the hope of a better turnout than going to the High Court.
