Motzei Shabbos News Roundup From Israel


An IDF officer was lightly injured on Friday after he was hit by shrapnel from an explosive device that was thrown by a terrorist during the weekly Friday protests at the Gaza Border. Terrorists who joined the protest also threw two hand-grenades at a military jeep as well as a series of pipe-bombs at IDF forces. The protesters burned tires, threw Molotov-cocktails and stones at soldiers in an attempt to kill or cause physical injury. In response, the IDF attacked two Hamas lookout posts in the area with airborne assaults. During the protests, nine terrorists managed to cut through the fence and then immediately returned into the Gaza Strip. Some 13,000 protesters participated in the violent protest this weekend. Soldiers used crowd-dispersing ammunition in order to subdue the crowd in conjunction with the protocols set forth for opening fire on suspicious persons. According to Arab media, two terrorists were killed during the protest and some 248 others were injured.

A balloon-bomb was discovered in the backyard of the home of MK Chaim Yallin. Yallin later remarked that: “My birthday has passed and so has Rosh Hashanah’ I guess that this is Hamas’ way of apologizing.”

A large-scale search was undertaken in the Kineret over Shabbat for a 66-year-old Tel Aviv man identified as Moshe Shamir, who participated in a race across the Kineret from Ha-On Beach on the eastern shore to the Deganya beach on the western shore. Shamir went missing during the race and forces from the maritime police unit, border police, mounted police, volunteers from the northern scuba-divers unit and regular officers as well as United Hatzalah’s maritime unit mounted a search for the missing swimmer. Specialized sonar, as well as air-rescue helicopters, also participated in the search, which has so far been unsuccessful.

A 24-year-old man was stabbed and seriously injured on Motzei Shabbos on Moshe Sharet Street in Holon. The man was treated for his injuries by first responders and transported by ambulance to Wolfson Medical Center having suffered stab wounds to his upper body.

The father of a five-year-old boy who was hospitalized after he ate a snack that had a dangerous drug in it, has been arrested ad taken for questioning. Police intend to request that the magisterial court in Rishon LeZion remand the suspect in custody until a full investigation can be mounted. The child is currently sedated and on a respirator in the children’s ICU ward and he is in serious condition.

A nine-year-old boy was moderately injured in Netanya on Motzei Shabbos after he fell off of a stairwell inside a Shul in the neighborhood of Ramat Chen. The child was taken by ambulance to Schneider’s Children’s Hospital while conscious and suffering from a serious head injury.

A 14-year-old boy riding an electric bicycle was moderately injured after he was involved in an accident with a car on Eli HaCohen Street in Ashkelon.

A 32-year-old motorcyclist was moderately injured after his motorcycle slipped on Highway 8944 near Elkosh intersection in the Galil.

A 17-year-old girl riding a motorcycle was moderately injured, and a second rider was lightly injured after the young woman’s motorcycle slipped on Enkor Street in Pardes Chana.

A 40-year-old man was rescued by the Ein Gedi Search and Rescue team on Shabbos morning after he fell and broke numerous limbs while hiking in the Bokek Wadi near the Dead Sea. The hiker was transported via the IDF Search and Rescue Unit 669 for treatment in Soroka hospital in Beer Sheva.

Israeli Gymnist, Linoi Ashram won her third medal at the Rhythmic World Gymnastic Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. Ashram has thus far won three medals, making Israeli gymnastic history as the first person to accomplish such a feat. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu called Ashram after Shabbos and said that all of Israel is proud because of her. Ashram will now take home two silver and one bronze medal. She is expected to compete in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and Israel has high hopes that she will achieve medals there as well.
