ALERT – Measles Outbreak Among People Returning From Uman After Rosh Hashana

Israel’s Health Ministry is warning of a potential measles outbreak among people who returned from the Ukrainian city of Uman after Rosh Hashana last week, Times of Israel reported.

The ministry says passengers traveling to Israel on three flights on September 12 were confirmed to have the measles, and warned that passengers on those flights were at risk of contracting the disease.

The statement said passengers on Ukrainian Airways flights PS101 and 779 and KLM flight 461 should see a doctor immediately.

The ministry said children, pregnant women and those suffering from auto-immune disorders were particularly susceptible to the disease.

Last month, the Health Ministry reported a massive increase in the number of reported cases of measles in Israel this year. It said 262 reported cases of the measles had been reported since the start of 2018, compared to only nine in all of 2016, and 33 cases in 2017.

  1. There have been recent measles outbreaks throughout the world, mostly in poor, third-world countries. Does that tell us anything about frum communities where these outbreaks are also occurring?

This reminds me of the joke about the frum guy caught in flood from Hurricane Katrina: A rowboat came to his rescue, he turned it away, said he would rather learn Torah and trust in Hashem. A motorboat then came and he turned it away, said he would rather learn Torah and trust in Hashem. A helicopter then came, and he turned it away, said he would rather learn Torah and trust in Hashem. He then drowned, went to the next world and, humbly, asked an angel why Hashem did not rescue him. The angel said Hashem had sent him a rowboat, a motorboat and a helicopter.

    So get vaccinated.

  2. Yet, another in a long list of reasons, why the vast majority of Yidden have no business going to Uman.

Measles in pregnant women causes mentally and physically retarded babies.

  3. chiefshmerel, while no vaccination is 100% effective, so even vaccinated people might occasionally be infected, if there’s an “outbreak” it must be that there’s a pool of unvaccinated people there.
