Motzei Shabbos News Round-Up From Israel


More than 70,000 people headed to Tel Aviv to participate in the festivities surrounding the Eurovision song contest on Shabbos and Motzei Shabbos. The Otzma Yehudit political party condemned the Chilul Shabbos surrounding the event and said that no government should be able to cause Chillul Shabbos. In addition, Hundreds of Charedim protested in Jerusalem against the Chilul Shabbos associated with the festival.

On Friday, Syria claimed that Israel had carried out airstrikes in their territory. On Shabbos they claimed that a second attack took place. A statement that appeared on many Syria media sites claimed that the country’s air defense systems were activated against multiple targets emanating from Israel. The IDF made no statement regarding the reports. According to reports, the target was a missile warehouse that was suspected of storing Iranian-made missiles.

Early Shabbos morning just after 1:00 a.m. two suspicious people attempted to break into the Jewish town of Migdalim in Samaria. The security team in the town noticed their movements and activated the security system and dispatched a team to the location. The suspects realized that they had been spotted and fled the area rushing to a nearby Arab village. They were not apprehended. The IDF dispatched a team to the location and has been patrolling around Migdalim in search of the suspects. The IDF forces remained in the Yishuv for the rest of Shabbos.

Hundreds of Jewish Americans and Israelis gathered on Friday in a Florida cemetery to pay their respects to Mika Levitt, a lone soldier from Florida who was found dead at an IDF army base last week on May 15th. Following the discovery of her body on her base her casket was flown to Florida to her family for burial.

Dozens of explosive balloons were launched from Gaza at Israel over Shabbos. The balloons, containing explosive devices, landed in Israel and a number of them landed inside a military base in Israel’s south. An IDF sapper was dispatched to the location and defused the bombs.

A large gas leak occurred on Friday night in a chemical plant in Haifa bay. Residents in the area of the city closest to the bay complained of an intense smell of gas in the air. Firefighters who were dispatched to the scene said that a dangerous amount of gas was in the air. Police closed off the streets around the Home Center intersection in Kiryat Haim for the entirety of Shabbos. Yigal Yadin and Chalutzei Ha’Ta’asiya Street were closed for an elongated time.

Police closed off a section of Highway 90 between Ein Bokek and the Dragot Checkpoint after a sinkhole appeared in the middle of the highway.

A man was found dead on Hayarden Street in Haifa. On the man’s body, there were distinct signs of violence leading police to suspect the man had been murdered. Detectives are investigating the incident. A suspect was located near the street with blood on his clothing and was interrogated by the police. He has been remanded into custody.

A parachutist in his 20’s was injured and is in moderate condition after an accident occurred with his parachute on Friday near Be’er Sheva. The man was transported via medical helicopter to Soroka hospital for treatment.

A 57-year-old man was seriously injured and a 40-year-old man was moderately injured in an altercation that took place on HaRav Uziel Street in Be’er Sheva. Magen David Adom personnel and United Hatzalah volunteers treated the two men before they were transported to the hospital for further care.

A 40-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured in a car accident in the Druze town of Isfiya in the Carmel mountains. United Hatzalah volunteers from the city treated the man before he was transported to the hospital for treatment.
