JERUSALEM HAFGANOS EXPLODE FOR SECOND TIME TODAY: Protests Due To Arrest Of Chareidi Sisters [VIDEOS & PHOTOS]

For the second time today, rowdy Hafganos were held in Yerushalyim. At around 8:30PM, hundreds gathered At Bar Illan near Shmuel Hanavi, and protested in the street – bringing traffic to a halt.

The protest prompted a massive response by police, including riot police. Police had been stationed near Kikar Shabbos, where they were bracing a second round of protests. Instead, it was decided to protest at Bar Illan and Shmuel Hanavi.

As of this post, there were already nine protesters arrested at the Bar Illan intersection.

As YWN reported, early Monday afternoon, Jerusalem’s Kikar Shabbos was the venue of a stormy chareidi protest, following the arrest by military police of two chareidi sisters from Ramot. While such protests usually begin towards late afternoon and night, this one occurred ahead of the norm, resulting in a swift and stern police response.

Police ‘Yassam’ tactical forces were there along with mounted units, and there was little tolerance for the usually placing of garbage bins in the roadway and the sitting in the middle of the major intersection to block private vehicles and buses alike.

Police moved the protesters aside and cleared the way for buses. At least nine of the protesters were arrested. At least one person, a protester, required medical care for what appeared to be a non-serious head injury. There were no reported injuries among police.

The two chareidi sisters were arrested last Thursday at the Kosel as they were trying to collect money. They were not carrying identity cards at the time of their arrests and refused to cooperate and give police their identities. They were released from custody on Sunday night after their mother came and identified them.

However, a short time after arriving home in the Ramot area of Jerusalem, they were once again arrested, this time by military police.

The extremists heard of their arrests and promised to once again take to the streets to demand their release. Hence, the protests were held in Kikar Shabbos.

According to a Kikar Shabbos News report, police took revenge against the girls for failing to cooperate and identify themselves for several days, calling military police to report them.

Each girl had to pay a NIS 2000 bond in order to be released, in addition to signing that they will appear in court or to police if requested to do so.

The court stated that while police acted properly, there was no justification for extending their remand, ordering their release with the above conditions.

  1. The draft issue is a problem that needs to be resolved. However, I am confident in saying that there is no Torah justification for the wild behavior that these extremists perform that disrupts thousands if lives of people who are innocent. There is such a thing as אדם המזיק, and these goons personify that. They are a complete disgrace, and I hope those bochurim who do these ugly deeds remain single and not pass on these defective midos to another generation. they were sent to yeshivos to learn, not to impede others’ lives. I heap shame on anyone considered a Rav or Rosh Yeshiva that supports this bitul Torah, public menacing, and plain old chilul Hashem.

  2. Not here to write negative about anyone but I just had an interesting thought. The whole U.S ( especially us Yidden) were going crazy last week ( rightfully so ) on AOC when she compared the detainment to concentration camps.
PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY CALLING THE ISRAELI POLICE OFFICERS A “NAZI” IS ANY DIFFERENT????

  3. THIS SITUATION IS NOT NORMAL. THIS BLOCK IS A POPULAR STREET FOR BACHURIM SINCE ITS IN YESHIVA AREA. WHY WERE SOME BACHURIM WHO WAS JUST WATCHING, JUST WATCHING, NOT DOING ANYTHING BUT WATCHING FROM THE SIDEWALK GET PICKED UP BY THE POLICE AND THROWN ONTO THE GROUND, BLEEDING? I SAW IT.

THE POLICE ARE BEYOND WILD AND COME TO BEAT ANYONE THEY SEE- NOT JUST THOSE PROTESTING.

THE REASON WHY THEY NEED TO PROTEST IS BECAUSE YES, THIS IS WHAT WORKS IN ISRAEL. WE’VE SEEN IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN. PROTESTS WORK. YELLING WORKS. ONLY IN ISRAEL BUT YELLING WORKS. IN FACT, ANYONE WHO LIVES HERE KNOW ISRAELIS TEND TO YELL AND SCREAM ABOUT ANYTHING AND IF YOU NEED TO GET YOUR WAY YOU NEED TO YELL BACK. EVEN THE KNESSET IS A NOISE MACHINE.

I needed to get something covered by my Kupat Cholim recently and called my doctors office for assistance. The secretary said “Did you yell at them? Only yelling will get it covered”

  4. #3, because if the way they protest is shameful, their words are also shameful. So it is to be expected. However an elected political congress women, needs to have her words measured and held accountable for.

  5. Josh, it depends what the police are doing. Sometimes police, including Israeli police, really do behave like nazis, and it’s not wrong to say so. And if the US detention camps were comparable to the nazi camps it wouldn’t be wrong to say so either; but they’re not.

  6. mr. canter what religion do you practice?

josh the explanation is in rashi who says godol hamachtio yoser min hahorgo

for the unlearned someone who causes others to sin is worse than someone who kills him

  7. The little I know: Hafganos have been going on for decades and I cant recall any time that the gedolim came out unanimously to say Stop Protesting

  8. I dont understand why everyone goes crazy when a group of charedim who represent a very large segment of israeli jews always get criticized for making protests.

The whole world can protest in capital cities from nes york to beijing yet the chareidim wether or not they have a legitimate reason to protest ,can’t express their feelings. Orthodox jewry is not sheepish . We can proudly scream our opinions in our land

  9. Seriously? Even giyus banos wer’e not suppose to protest? Even when wer’e discussing Chareidi girls?

Wow! A new low! I always assumed that at some point YWN and their distinguished readership will find their red line whereby protests would be warranted. I was wrong. It started with yeshiva bochurim, the answer was that they brought it on themselves. It developed to arrests of girls who were ba’alei teshuvah, and the answer was ‘who said theyr’e really frum’ or ‘ it’s really chiloni girls that are trying to abuse the system’. Now even YWN acknowledges in its headline that we are talking about CHAREIDI girls, yet still the protests by caring yidden who never met these girls are met with disdain and condemnation by this site and the commenters above.

So the Chazon Ish was nichshal (CH”V) in Chillul Hashem when he made the massive protest in Yerushalayim?? What about the Brisker Rav, Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer, the Beis Yisrael of Ger, the Steipler, Rav Shach, Rav Reuvein Bengis, Rav Chaim Shmuelvitz and so many more who participated in the hafgana were they all complicit in a massive Chillul Hashem??

The well known psak was Yehareig Ve’al Ya’avor. Anyone who believes that Da’as Torah is what charters our day, should at least admire the protesters who are willing to take the beatings from the riot police, along with insults and jeers from some of their brothers, all to follow what our Chachamim have instructed of us.

Why are hafganos only allowed when police beat an autistic boy? Or when an illegal settlement is evacuated? Or when disabled folk want a higher disability check? Or when Teva employees are upset that they will be laid off in 2 years?

Doesn’t Yiddishkeit warrant an equal amount of outrage when its being trampled upon?

  10. Hi YWN
1 I don’t think they’re right the protesters the way they do it ne do I think that the police are right. I was a lot in Israel in geulah both sides are big baby’s and both sides are on the search for action.
But my question is how do you as news agency take a side how do you call them extremists???
With what are you better then CNN??

  11. Not identifying yourself to a police officer for shtick is trampling on yiddishkeit, and demands outrage or at least incarceration. Causing frum Jews to look like lawless, amoral thugs removes that whole group from any connection to daas torah, mitzvos and olam habah.
And the rabbi of crawlly should watch the video out of kever shimon hatzadik last week, where the onlookers were sheepish indeed.
All these deadending loosers are proving to the secular, and increasingly to many chareidim, is that chareidim best be a part of greater society, lest they end up like these godless zombies.

  12. RRR:

I do not have anything against protests. And I reserve my opinion about the entire giyus issue. I can accept the opinion that it is horrible and needs to be addressed. What is incompatible with Torah, and you should understand this without much difficulty, is the public menacing that goes on. Whether it is fire setting, yelling obscenities, or blocking traffic for hundreds if not thousands of innocent people, blocking a passageway for emergency vehicles, it is impossible (unless you do not believe in a great many principles of Torah) to see this is following דרכיה דרכי נועם. As someone who wishes to get through that intersection, I have zero responsibility for the entire giyus issue, and it is evil for these protesters to damage me. They should express their wrath toward the governmental agencies who are doing this. But these baalei gaavah and baalei taavah are simply releasing their pressure against the entire population. I even suspect that there is a significant percentage of them that are not even protesting lishmoh.

So, Dear RRR. Protest all you like. Strain your vocal cords, and commit all the bitul Torah you wish. It’s your yetzer horah, and you need to address that, not me. But do not inflict the punishment on me. I’m as innocent as they come, and you have no privilege to impose your issues on me.

As for the Chazon Ish and the other Gedolim who protested, they never, ever committed the shameful things done by these thugs, and they never endorsed being a menace to the entire tzibbur. Outrage – certainly. מצער את הציבור – never.

  13. A yeshivish guy, you wrote: “So the Chazon Ish was nichshal (CH”V) in Chillul Hashem when he made the massive protest in Yerushalayim?? What about the Brisker Rav, Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer, the Beis Yisrael of Ger, the Steipler, Rav Shach, Rav Reuvein Bengis, Rav Chaim Shmuelvitz and so many more who participated in the hafgana were they all complicit in a massive Chillul Hashem??”

If you believe they demonstrated like these animals then 1) you are being mezalzail talmidei chachamim 2) get a refund of all your yeshiva tuition, you do not know how to be medameh milta le’milta.

i hope you do not die in an ambulance that is slowed down by such hagfanot.

  14. My son had an interesting insight recently. There is a segment of chareidi society that view the world in a way that is analogous to the way some black Americans do. The latter see whatever real grievances they have as being just part of a larger, malicious planned persecution, being inflicted on them by “the Man”. That in addition to imagined grievances.

So with some of these, insular, groups. it’s not that issues like the draft and arrests aren’t important issues, worthy of protest, it’s that the protests stem from a sense of persecution, quite at odds with the reality that the representative of chareidi Jewry have influence and, sometimes, even power. If you chat with taxi drivers (the journalist’s cliche of popular opinion, who are often traditional Jews) you will find widespread understanding of the significance of the draft issue for chareidim.

As for the police, I’m afraid that, like most police forces, they will do whatever they can get away with. Given the fragmented nature of the police can beat up virtually any group, secure in the knowledge that most other people will think they deserve it!

  15. Nothing has changed in 50 years. I still remember Kikar HaShabbos and Bar Illan being a main artery to drive through Yerushalayim. The grsndfathers and fathers of these protestors gave up their time and dignity to protest week after week. These were Kaarta Dyerushalaym – the most learned and elite of Jerusalem gave up their Shabbos and much more for the sake of Shabbos. And that yielded results.
It’s a way of life unfortunately in Israel where the establishment has a hatred of Torah and observance and will jump at any opportunity to show who is stronger as they are losing membership by the millions. Their kids are either leaving to Canada, India or Sweden and have no issue marrying local goyim or they are becoming Baalei Teshuva. I met a secular Isreali Kibbutznikut in Germany recently, she told me they have an expression now – אין בית אשר אין שם דות meaning that every family now has at least one BT. Actually this Yeshiva son of hers calls home at least 3 times a week and visits every Friday. Her other 2 grown children havent called in months – one of them does not want to give his number to his own Mum!
We must support those who demonstrate for Kevod Shamayim. However, blocking legitimate traffic and damaging public property is abhorrent.
We must also daven for downfall of the Reshoiim.

  16. TLIK; So your inconvenience is a far greater catastrophe than the sanctity of Bnos Yisroel! Very revealing of your secularist mindset. Unfortunately this is the only language the Zionist bullies understand. One reason why I live in the U.S. where my daughters are not subject to the draft or “national service”!
How dare you say “I’ll reserve my judgement” on something that Gedolei Yisroel called Yeherag v’al yaavor! Hellenists like you are the true disgrace!
Giyus banos is also pikuach nefesh not only your favorite ambulance stories. Your delay is just collateral damage. Be happy it’s only a delay from some screaming and yelling, not firebombings and shootings like the Arabs or others would do.

  17. DrYidd, I would recommend that you look into the footage from that hafgana 50 years ago. There is footage of the police beating protesters, and spraying them with fire hoses. That hafgana also blocked major arteries when tens of thousands came to protest.

Also, R’ Menachem Porush Z”L (father of MK Meir Porush of Agudas Yisrael) said over publicly how the Chazon Ish instructed him “להשתולל” at the protest against Giyus Banos.

  18. Uncle Ben:

Your comment is disgraceful, and not because of the vile accusations you hurled at me. I would hope that no one ever considers any of your children as a shidduch for mine. I dread being part of your gene pool.

These thugs are letting out their rage on me, who did absolutely nothing to deserve it. They should take out their rage on the forces that they are protesting, not me. It is not about my convenience. It is about safety, emergency vehicles getting through, it is about מצער את הציבור that the Shulchan Aruch permits arkaos, it is about doing exactly what the Gedolei Yisroel who you have maligned said not to do. It is not a secularist mindset at all. Rather, i am obsessed with promoting Kiddush Hashem, and avoiding chilul Hashem at all costs. I can understand the giyus issue, and I am repulsed by how the Zionist government is dealing with it.

Go ahead, scream and yell. Just get out of the streets where vehicles drive. Your saichel is not much different from Mayor Dinkins y”sh who advocated for the angry blacks to riot in Crown Heights and commit murders and other violent crimes to express their feelings. One doesn’t need to disagree with the feelings to recognize that these protests are being driven in a way that promotes the agenda of the Satan, not the legitimate protest against laws that threaten the kedusha of Bnos Yisroel. And your goons, for whom bitul Torah is acceptable, should take their protests to the government offices, not the neighborhoods where their damage is against our own innocent people.

  19. With regard to Benny’s obsession with disruptive thugs, hoodlums and their misguided mentors who he mindlessly references as “gadolim” , it seems that letting him rant is likely the best option. Don’t worry about mixing genes, his family etc…they likely are as much a figment of his imagination as are most of his misogynistic assertions about “protecting” bnos yisroel (which hopefully he will never be allowed near for reasons that don’t have to be outlined here).

  20. What I don’t understand is how it’s permissible to call the Israeli police “Nazis.” Anyone who calls the Israeli police “Nazis” hasn’t the vaguest idea what the real Nazis were. I’ve had quite a few friends who knew, including several who lost all or almost all of their families in Europe.

How many protesters were killed? None? Real Nazis would have used Uzis. How many protesters were hospitalized with serious injuries? None. Real Nazis would have left the streets running with blood. No horse charges trampling protesters into the pavement? They were goofing off. Obviously anyone who calls the Israeli cops “Nazis” hasn’t been reading history or even talking with their great-grandparents.

It’s forbidden to call a fellow Jew by the name of a non-kosher animal, kal v’chomer call one a Nazi. Yes, I’ve lived in Israel and I’ve seen Israeli cops breaking up left-wing demonstrations back in the and they were anything but gentle. But “Nazis?” Enough already.

  21. Why are these people out there instead of being in koslei beis medrash? I am no longer giving any money to Jerusalem based charities as a protest to this stupidity. Ai, “why should the innocent suffer”?
What about the innocent people affected by these shmekels trying to get around the city to do their business/keep appointments or the people who live in the area being affected by burnt dumpsters?

The tzdakas organizations countrywide should have their members sign a document that if they are seen ACTIVELY PARTICIPATING in a hafgana they will be removed from funding/attending the yeshiva etc. – that institution i will support.

    Let’s see what THAT does
