In a surprising development at the height of the coalition crisis over the draft law, UTJ chairman Yitzchak Goldknopf and Gerrer Askan Motty Bobchik reportedly held a private meeting Sunday night with Prime Minister Netanyahu.
The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem shortly before the IDF announced heightened readiness for a possible Iranian missile attack. According to reports, the conversation lasted for an extended period and focused largely on the ongoing dispute surrounding the draft law.
During the meeting, Goldknopf reportedly told Netanyahu: “We left the coalition because you promised the Gerrer Rebbe that the draft law would pass, and you did not keep that promise. We are waiting for you to keep your word.”
Netanyahu reportedly responded: “You want us to pass the law now?”
Goldknopf also raised the issue of Bobchik’s departure from the Housing Ministry, asking Netanyahu, “This is not how friends treat one another. Why did you demand that Bobchik be dismissed from the Housing Ministry?”
According to the report, Netanyahu denied involvement, replying: “I did not demand that he be fired.”
A source in the Prime Minister’s Office who became aware of the meeting described it as significant.
“We were surprised by this meeting,” the source said. “This pair has not been here in a very long time. It’s a significant development that they are meeting with the prime minister after many months of what appeared publicly to be a complete disconnect.”
Sources close to Goldknopf, however, downplayed the encounter, claiming that “it was a chance meeting.”
The revelation comes as tensions remain high between the chareidi parties and the coalition over the stalled draft law and the continued arrests of yeshiva bochurim.
