The Israeli government on Tuesday approved Transportation Minister Miri Regev’s proposal to allocate an additional NIS 100 million for transportation infrastructure projects in northern Israel during 2026 and 2027.
The funding is in addition to approximately NIS 200 million that was previously approved under the government’s original transportation development plan for the region. According to the Transportation Ministry, the investment is intended to improve connectivity between communities, strengthen regional transportation networks, and support long-term economic growth in the North.
The approval comes as Israel continues broader efforts to rehabilitate northern communities affected by the war. While the new funding is dedicated specifically to transportation infrastructure, government rehabilitation plans for the region extend far beyond roads and transit projects.
Broader government programs call for investments totaling billions of shekels for rebuilding damaged communities, encouraging displaced residents to return home, assisting businesses, strengthening agriculture, expanding public services, and promoting long-term economic and demographic growth.
Officials also noted that the newly approved NIS 100 million will come from within the Transportation Ministry’s existing budget rather than as an increase to the ministry’s overall funding.
Transportation Minister Miri Regev welcomed the decision, calling it “another significant step in our commitment to continue investing in the North and creating transportation infrastructure that will enable real growth for the region.”
She said transportation remains a key driver of economic and social development and that the ministry will continue investing in projects designed to improve accessibility, strengthen regional population centers, and better connect communities with employment hubs and essential services.
Transportation Ministry Director-General Moshe Ben Zaken said the funding will support regionally significant projects based on long-term planning and professional assessments, while allowing the ministry to accelerate construction in cooperation with local authorities and government infrastructure companies.
Although the additional funding represents another investment in northern Israel, discussion is expected to continue over whether transportation funding alone is sufficient given the scale of the region’s post-war recovery needs and the broader rehabilitation efforts still required.
