Iran generated an estimated $5–6 billion in oil sales during the roughly one-month suspension of the U.S. maritime blockade, giving Tehran a significant financial cushion before the restrictions were reinstated, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
The report, citing United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) and energy analysts, said Iran exported approximately 70 million barrels of oil between mid-June and mid-July using about 20 tankers. Much of the oil was transferred ship-to-ship off Malaysia’s eastern coast before continuing to China, making it more difficult to trace the shipments.
Analysts say the surge in exports is expected to provide Iran with billions of dollars in additional revenue in the coming months, strengthening its economy despite the renewed U.S. blockade. The blockade was temporarily lifted in June under a U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement but was reinstated by President Donald Trump after the agreement collapsed last week.
U.S. naval forces are now enforcing the renewed blockade by preventing ships from entering or leaving Iranian ports, in an effort to cut off one of Tehran’s most important sources of revenue.
