Israel is continuing construction of a major security barrier stretching across the Gaza Strip along what the IDF calls the “Yellow Line,” with new satellite imagery showing the project now extends across more than half the length of the enclave.
According to an investigation by the Associated Press, approximately 23 kilometers of the barrier have been built in recent months, cutting through areas heavily damaged during the war. Following publication of the report, the IDF confirmed construction is underway in the Yellow Line area.
The military said the project is designed to create a security zone that prevents terrorist infiltration, protects Israeli communities near Gaza, and safeguards IDF forces operating inside the Strip. The AP, however, reported that portions of the construction appear to extend beyond the Yellow Line, raising questions about whether the barrier could eventually become a more permanent boundary.
Satellite images show construction accelerating in recent weeks. Near Rafah, the barrier expanded from roughly 500 meters on July 1 to about 2.4 kilometers by July 15, extending toward the Al-Mawasi area. More than two additional kilometers were added to the southern section over the past two weeks.
The report said that if construction continues at its current pace, the southern segment is expected to connect with another roughly 17-kilometer section running from Khan Younis toward Gaza City. Additional construction has also been observed near Khan Younis and Beit Lahia in northern Gaza.
