Iran is denying the existence of any secret nuclear facility at the so-called “Pickaxe Mountain” after President Donald Trump warned that the United States could strike the site.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei dismissed the claims in a post on X, calling Washington’s focus on Kolang Kouh “a fabricated pretext for aggression, destruction, and sabotage.”
“Washington’s obsessive focus on Kolang Kouh where no nuclear activity is taking place is nothing more than a fabricated pretext for aggression, destruction, and sabotage,” Baqaei wrote.
He also insisted that “Iran’s nuclear activities have been fully declared” to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog.
Trump warned Tuesday that the U.S. could target the site but has not taken military action.
Reports published in 2025 by The Washington Post and The New York Times alleged that Iran had accelerated construction of a deeply buried underground nuclear facility inside Kolang Mountain, near the Natanz nuclear complex. Tehran denied those reports at the time as well.
The mountain is located adjacent to Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility, which was struck by U.S. forces during last year’s brief war with Iran.
