Democrats chairman Yair Golan sent Sara Netanyahu a formal warning Tuesday ahead of possible legal action, accusing the prime minister’s wife of defaming him through comments she made regarding his actions on the morning of the October 7 Hamas attack.

Golan warned that he would seek 2.5 million shekels in a defamation lawsuit and demanded that Sara Netanyahu issue a public apology within 24 hours. He also demanded financial compensation that would be donated in full to survivors of the Nova massacre.

The legal warning followed Sara Netanyahu’s Channel 14 interview, in which she suggested that Golan appeared to have been prepared unusually early on October 7. “You claim that you were a fighter on October 7, you were already there very early in the morning, already dressed and ready,” she said, adding that this was at a time when others, “such as the prime minister,” did not yet know what was happening.

According to Golan’s warning letter, he first learned of the attack when the initial sirens sounded at 6:29 a.m. He then drove in his private vehicle to the Home Front Command headquarters, obtained an assault rifle and traveled to the Gaza border area. The letter says Golan repeatedly entered the area where young people fleeing the Nova massacre had gathered and rescued six of them.

The apology demanded by Golan would require Sara Netanyahu to retract her remarks and acknowledge that he learned of the Hamas attack only when the sirens began and subsequently traveled south to help rescue people from the massacre.

Golan’s attorneys described Netanyahu’s remarks as defamatory and false, arguing that they portrayed him as though he had participated in an act of betrayal. They further alleged that the comments were intended to damage his reputation ahead of the election. Those are allegations made in Golan’s legal warning and have not been adjudicated by a court.

Golan separately accused Netanyahu and her allies of attempting to rewrite the history of October 7 and turn those who responded to the attack into traitors while shifting responsibility away from the government.
