Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned Tuesday that Tehran could respond militarily if the United States intensifies what Iranian officials describe as an economic and maritime “siege,” even as he signaled that Iran remains prepared to restore the June ceasefire agreement with Washington.
Pezeshkian said Iran would return to the agreement if the United States once again fulfills its commitments, portraying Tehran’s position as reciprocal rather than a unilateral concession.
“If the U.S. returns to its commitments in the memorandum of understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately reciprocate,” Pezeshkian said.
At the same time, Iranian officials warned that additional American pressure could produce the opposite result. Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran would consider a military response if the U.S. further tightens its blockade and economic pressure on Iran.
The warnings come as Iran continues working with Oman on efforts related to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which remains at the center of the confrontation. Tehran is also holding discussions with Russia and China as it seeks diplomatic and economic support amid continued American pressure.
Iranian officials have attempted to present two parallel messages: that Tehran remains open to restoring the June ceasefire arrangement, while warning that it will not accept an intensified U.S. campaign without responding.
Pezeshkian’s remarks underscore that Tehran is publicly leaving the door open to an agreement with Washington even as Iranian leaders threaten further escalation if American pressure increases.
