President Trump said Wednesday that Israel should not be concerned about the possibility of renewed war with Iran, as fighting between the United States and Iran has resumed around the Strait of Hormuz.
“Israel does not need to worry about a renewed war with Iran. I am the president, and I will take care of Israel,” Trump said in an interview with Kan News.
The comments come amid renewed U.S.-Iran strikes in the Strait of Hormuz region. U.S. administration officials who have been briefed on the situation said the current objective is not to expand the war, but rather to continue efforts aimed at reducing the threat Iran poses to ships in the area.
U.S. officials have expressed satisfaction with American forces’ success in helping oil tankers transit the Strait despite the Iranian blockade. The administration claims that the number of barrels passing through the area this week is now close to pre-war levels.
International officials monitoring maritime traffic have confirmed that shipping activity through the area has increased, although they have expressed doubts about the precise figures being presented by the Trump administration.
Meanwhile, Tehran is threatening countries that cooperate with the new sanctions imposed on Iran by Washington.
An Iranian political activist opposed to the regime warned in an interview with Kan News on Tuesday that the economic pressure being placed on the Iranian public does not directly affect the government. He warned that as sanctions become more severe, extremist elements inside Iran could grow stronger and the situation could enter a path from which there is no return.
