Mossad Director Roman Gofman has decided that Brig. Gen. G., the former head of the IDF Military Intelligence Operations Division, will not continue serving in the Mossad or elsewhere in Israel’s security establishment, according to a Channel 12 report.
Brig. Gen. G. headed the Operations Division in Military Intelligence on the morning of the October 7 massacre and was later loaned to the Mossad after IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir decided he would not continue in a senior IDF position.
The officer had previously sought to become commander of the IDF’s elite Unit 8200 but was not selected for the position. He subsequently joined the Mossad on a temporary assignment.
According to the report, former Mossad Director Dedi Barnea and Zamir agreed last November that Brig. Gen. G. would eventually leave the security establishment due to his failures surrounding October 7. However, Gofman initially explored the possibility of keeping him in the system.
Gofman reportedly contacted Maj. Gen. (res.) Sami Turgeman, who headed an examination of the IDF’s October 7 failures, to seek his assessment of the officer. Turgeman reportedly told Gofman that while he did not disqualify Brig. Gen. G. from future service, his responsibility for the failures surrounding the massacre could not be minimized.
Gofman met with Brig. Gen. G. at Mossad headquarters on Tuesday and informed him that his temporary assignment would not be extended and that he would not continue serving in Israel’s security establishment.
The decision comes amid an unusual connection between the two men. Earlier this year, when Gofman’s appointment as Mossad director faced a legal challenge, Brig. Gen. G. submitted an affidavit to the High Court supporting Gofman’s account regarding a separate intelligence affair. The affidavit reportedly helped clear the way for Gofman’s appointment.
Brig. Gen. G. is considered the highest-ranking Military Intelligence officer to have his service ended over the failures surrounding October 7.
