The IDF says it has cleared two underground routes leading to a strategic Hezbollah stronghold along the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, as Israeli forces continue operations in the area roughly six kilometers from the Israeli border.
The ongoing operation, which began in June, has reportedly left dozens of Hezbollah terrorists and Iranian advisers trapped inside tunnels beneath the strategic ridge.
According to Iranian Revolutionary Guard officials cited by The New York Times, between 70 and 100 Hezbollah terrorists and Iranian Quds Force advisers are surrounded in the tunnel network.
Attempts to deliver food and water to those trapped underground using drones have been thwarted by Israel, with the IDF eliminating terrorists who emerged from the tunnels in an attempt to retrieve the supplies.
Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly sent a warning to the United States through Oman, which has served as an intermediary between Washington and Tehran, declaring that an Israeli takeover of the Ali al-Taher ridge would constitute a “red line” and trigger a forceful response.
The developments threaten to further escalate tensions in Lebanon and come amid already heightened regional tensions following the collapse of understandings between the United States and Iran aimed at halting military operations across multiple fronts.
Responding to the Iranian threats, Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that an Iranian attack would free Israel from existing restraints and allow it to strike critical infrastructure, including energy facilities.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said he believes Israel has the ability to eliminate the Iranian threat “once and for all,” while describing the Iranian regime as fighting for its survival.
