Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon has launched a new international initiative aimed at turning condemnations of antisemitism into coordinated action by governments, diplomats and international institutions, The Jerusalem Post reported.
The initiative will focus on identifying emerging antisemitic threats and developing practical tools and policies to combat them, with participating countries expected to coordinate diplomatic efforts as part of the campaign. Danon argued that declarations alone are no longer sufficient as antisemitism continues to rise around the world.
Danon also urged the United Nations to make the fight against antisemitism a priority when selecting its next secretary-general and called on additional countries to join the initiative.
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. for Management and Reform Jeff Bartos spoke at the launch event, describing the world as facing a “global pandemic of antisemitism.” He also criticized conduct by certain U.N. special rapporteurs, arguing that their actions damage the institution’s reputation.
EU Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism Katharina von Schnurbein also addressed the gathering, warning that it is unacceptable that many Jews increasingly feel compelled to hide their Jewish identity and stressing that antisemitism cannot be tolerated anywhere.
