Algeria announced Thursday that it has severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates following months of escalating political tensions.

Algerian officials said that all “efforts to preserve bilateral ties had been exhausted.”

In a statement, Algeria’s Foreign Ministry accused Abu Dhabi of continuing what it described as “provocative and hostile actions” despite repeated warnings. The ministry said recent developments had gone beyond what could reasonably be tolerated between two sovereign states.

The Emirati ambassador was summoned to the ministry and formally informed of the decision. He was given 48 hours to leave Algeria.

Tensions have intensified in recent months over several issues affecting North Africa and the Sahel.

Algeria has accused the UAE of interfering in its internal affairs and supporting various regional actors. Abu Dhabi’s close relationship with Morocco has also become a major source of friction, particularly amid the ongoing dispute over Western Sahara.

The two countries have taken opposing positions on the conflicts in Libya, Mali and Sudan. The UAE’s expanding relationship with Israel has created another point of tension, given Algeria’s strong opposition to normalization with Israel.

In February, Algeria moved to terminate its air services agreement with the UAE, providing an early indication of the deterioration in relations.

The decision follows a series of accusations and diplomatic warnings exchanged amid growing competition between Algeria and the UAE for influence across the region.

The UAE has not yet issued an official response.
