A top Iranian security official is publicly rejecting negotiations with the United States, pushing back sharply after President Donald Trump said Tehran is seeking a deal with Washington.
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Iran would not enter negotiations unless its conditions are first met, accusing Trump of sending conflicting signals about Washington’s willingness to engage with Tehran.
“Don’t get distracted by the US president’s mixed signals-from ‘no negotiations’ to ‘we’re ready to talk,’” Rezaei wrote on social media.
“The stakes around oil and the straits have changed. Damage control won’t stop what’s coming,” he added. “No talks until Iran’s conditions are met. Period!”
The comments came after Trump said the Iranian regime wants an agreement “quickly and badly,” while indicating that the United States remains open to engagement.
The public rejection underscores the continuing uncertainty surrounding efforts to reach a new understanding between Washington and Tehran following months of confrontation and repeated disputes over Iran’s nuclear program, regional waterways and U.S. pressure on the Islamic Republic.
Rezaei’s hardline position also appeared to contrast with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who said Monday that Tehran is prepared to return to negotiations with Washington, including discussions concerning its nuclear program.
