CLOUD WAR DAMAGE: Amazon Says Data Lost After Iran Strikes Cripple Middle East Facilities

Amazon says it has been unable to restore access to some of its cloud infrastructure in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates after facilities were severely damaged during the Iran war, highlighting the lasting technological fallout from the fighting.

Amazon Web Services said its Bahrain region suffered damage beyond what its systems were designed to withstand, while one of its three data-hosting zones in the UAE also remains inaccessible, Reuters reported Tuesday.

The disruptions initially affected customers across the region, including financial institutions. AWS subsequently moved many customers to alternative facilities, but some data belonging to clients who had not migrated before the infrastructure was knocked offline cannot currently be recovered.

The damage is now prompting governments and technology companies in the Gulf to reconsider how critical cloud infrastructure is protected during wartime, including whether data centers should be more geographically dispersed and built with greater physical protection.
