Prime Minister Netanyahu’s official aircraft, “Wing of Zion,” is expected to avoid JFK Airport when he travels to New York next week for his address to the United Nations General Assembly, amid concerns that Mayor Zohran Mamdani could prevent the aircraft from remaining at the airport throughout Netanyahu’s visit, Ynet reports.
Netanyahu is expected to arrive in New York next Wednesday ahead of his UN address on Thursday. Israeli security officials are considering Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey or a nearby military airfield as alternatives for Wing of Zion.
The U.S. Secret Service is also expected to significantly increase its involvement in Netanyahu’s security, accompanying him from the moment he lands until his departure. Anti-Netanyahu demonstrations are expected outside his hotel and during his UN address, while the Jewish community is organizing demonstrations in support of the prime minister.
Mamdani, who previously declared that he would arrest Netanyahu before later backing away from that position, is encouraging people to protest the prime minister’s visit. Israeli officials are also preparing for possible provocations during Netanyahu’s speech, including representatives of some countries walking out of the General Assembly hall.
Netanyahu is not expected to meet President Donald Trump during the trip, as Trump is scheduled to leave New York before the prime minister arrives, although meetings with other world leaders remain possible.
