KAPPAROS BATTLE: 13 Israeli Cities Move To Ban Live Chickens For Minhag Ahead Of Yom Kippur

Thirteen Israeli municipalities will not permit the use of live chickens for kapparos in their jurisdictions ahead of Yom Kippur, with several cities joining the restrictions this year and others renewing previous bans, The Times of Israel reported.

The municipalities joining the initiative this year include Tel Mond, Yeruham, Mevaseret Zion and Yavne, while Kiryat Bialik and Rishon Lezion renewed commitments made previously.

They join Kfar Saba, Ra’anana, Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Beersheba, Ashkelon, Ramle and Petah Tikva, which have already restricted the use of live chickens for kapparos.

Public kapparos involving live chickens require authorization from local veterinary authorities, giving municipalities the ability to prevent the practice from taking place at public locations within their jurisdictions.

The campaign is being promoted by the Israeli animal-rights organization Let the Animals Live, which is encouraging people to perform kapparos using money donated to tzedakah instead of chickens.

  1. Doom, is there a problem here, either chicken or money have to belong to the person, not taken against someone’s will. Make sure you use Ehrliche private donations for your kaporos, lulav and sukkah
