National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir released dramatic footage Sunday showing himself confronting senior Hamas terrorist Hassan Salameh in prison, telling the convicted mass murderer that he wants to see him executed.
Salameh was convicted for orchestrating deadly Hamas suicide bombings in 1996, including two attacks on the No. 18 bus line in Yerushalayim that killed dozens of Israelis.
In the video, Ben Gvir stands face-to-face with Salameh while surrounded by armed, masked prison guards.
Ben Gvir described the encounter as a deeply personal “full-circle” moment, recalling that as a teenager he took to the streets to protest following the horrific bus bombings.
Decades later, he said, he was standing before the Hamas terrorist as Israel’s national security minister.
“These are the conditions I gave you. But it’s not the end,” Ben Gvir told Salameh. “I want to kill you. I want to put you to death.”
Ben Gvir then told the terrorist that while he would face punishment in the next world, “here I’m responsible for hell.”
In accompanying remarks, Ben Gvir said that when he was a teenager, innocent Israelis were murdered and entire families devastated in the Yerushalayim bombings.
He said that approximately two weeks ago, he visited the prison and met Salameh personally, describing the Hamas terrorist as an associate of former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
Ben Gvir has made tougher conditions for Palestinian security prisoners a central component of his tenure as national security minister and has repeatedly publicized visits to prisons. Critics and rights groups have challenged aspects of those policies, while the Israel Prison Service has denied allegations of systematic abuse.
The minister has also repeatedly advocated legislation imposing the death penalty on terrorists.
