President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the apparent attempted hijacking of the Flydubai flight carrying Israeli passengers, saying the suspect may have been a terrorist or mentally unstable.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said Netanyahu briefed him on the extraordinary incident, including reports that a plumber aboard the aircraft helped level the plane after it went into a nosedive.

Trump said the suspect “was perhaps a terrorist or perhaps a whack-job.”

“I don’t know if it’s true, but that’s the story that I got from Bibi and from a couple of other people,” Trump told reporters.

Trump also addressed reports that the copilot deliberately intended to bring down the aircraft, while stressing that the information had not been established.

“They said [the pilot] wanted to crash the plane, but they don’t have that kind of information,” Trump said.

The comments came hours after the Israeli passengers returned home following the dramatic ordeal, which ended when the Flydubai aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
