Levi Jurkowicz is on a mission: to change people’s perception of Asian cuisine.

The restaurant’s signature menu items are Pho and Ramen, thus the name: PhoMen. Located on 411 Troy Avenue, PhoMen is pioneering the introduction of these unique dishes into the Kosher world.

When you think soup, you probably think vegetable soup or your Bubbe’s chicken soup. Asian soups are completely different. Made from a meat stock that has been boiled down for several dozen hours, and then created by adding a selection of fresh vegetables and large amount of spices, the result is different than anything you’ve ever tasted.

When you walk in to PhoMen, the staff’s goal is to educate you, to get to know you. They’ll explain the difference between different items on the menu: Pho is Vietnamese, and has a hint of sweetness; Ramen is Japanese and has more of a smoky flavor.

At PhoMen, you’ll be introduced to a completely new world of foods and flavors, based off your personal preferences. This is food for the soul, food for the people. Portions that will leave you full for hours.

Levi Jurkowicz was first exposed to these exotic foods while traveling through Southeast Asia, and he resolved to create these native dishes, from Japan, Vietnam, Korea, Thailand and Cambodia, in kosher form. The chefs at often spends hours every day sourcing the highest quality ingredients, from high-end soy sauce with no MSG or GMO, to difficult-to-find vegetables they needs for their recipes.

PhoMen now boasts a new menu of over 30 choices, dishes that are young, hip and healthy and which cater to people who want something different. These are authentic homemade dishes from exotic parts of the world, full of spice and flavor.

“This is real flavor,” explains Jurkowitcz, He relates a story of one Shaliach from the Philippines who came to visit his crown heights restaurant during “Kinus Hashluchim”. This was the first time the Shaliach was able to experience the cuisine of their home country. “They had always smelled it and seen it every day, this was the first time they could finally taste it.”

PhoMen’s dishes are free of almost every allergen and dietary restriction, from gluten to peanuts – either right off the menu or with just basic modification. They offer a variety of options that serve as a gateway to more exotic foods – like hamgurgers or chicken on rice; the menu is a hit with kids as well. Prices range from $25-35, for a full fleishig meal.
