Boro Park Shomrim members urgently responded Monday night for a report of a victim that was robbed by a group of four individuals in the area of Ditmas Ave. and E. 7th Street. Flatbush Shomrim Warns of New Scam Targeting Businesses

Flatbush Shomrim is urging businesses to be wary of transactions being made on credit card processors after an individual attempted to steal thousands of dollars from multiple businesses. Sources tell YWN that the scammer first targeted grocery store on Nostrand Avenue between Ave. I and Ave. J. He picked up several products and went to check out, telling the cashier that he didn’t have his credit card on him and requesting to punch the numbers in manually on the store’s mobile credit card processor. The cashier obliged and handed over the machine. But instead of putting in a credit card number, the thief placed a different transaction – to give himself a $3,000 “refund.” He then left the grocery and went to a nearby restaurant where he pulled the same scam, this time for the sum of $1,000. Shomrim is now urging businesses to be wary of anyone requesting to purchase items by manually putting in their payment info, as well as advising them to check all transactions immediately after they are placed. NABBED: Serial Boro Park Burglar Arrested Following Shomrim Operation

An operation conducted by more than three dozen Boro Park Shomrim members resulted in the arrest of a serial burglar who had been menacing the community for well over a year. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Salvadore Fuentes, had long targeted Jewish homes and apartments on Friday nights, knowing full well that many Jewish residents let their guard down on Shabbos, and that many go away, as well. In response, Shomrim had been tracking and investigating Fuentes for over a year, and the organization’s opportunity to nab him came on Friday evening. When Fuentes was spotted canvassing a neighborhood looking for a break-in opportunity, a large contingent of Shomrim members converged on the area. When the suspect entered the premises, the NYPD was called. Officers from the 66th Precinct detained Fuentes, who already had a long rap sheet including twenty-four prior arrests, at 16th Avenue and 51th Street. He was found to be in possession of  multiple stolen items as well as burglary tools. Residents in Flatbush are used to seeing marked Flatbush Shomrim vehicles on patrol every Friday night and Yomim Tovim, making sure the streets stay safe. The Shabbos Patrol is manned by armed off-duty and retired NYPD Officers, who work in close coordination with the local Precincts. They are responsible for preventing many crimes, and this Friday night, two major arrests were made. Sources tell YWN that one of the Shomrim vehicles was flagged down by a homeowner on Ave L & East 27 Street and said a burglar was inside him home. The off-duty NYPD Officer quickly called for NYPD backup as well as another Shomrim vehicle to respond. Before Shomrim was able to get into the home, the burglar fled on foot, but the off-duty NYPD Officer noticed a van that was parked across the street which didn’t look like it belonged there. As suspected, the van was acting as a “lookout” and was LOADED with stolen goods in the back on the van. Police took the driver into custody. Meanwhile, the burglar began calling the cell phone of the driver (now in custody) to find out where he was. Police tracked the phone of the burglar after having his phone number, and took him into custody a short while later on Flatbush Avenue. Flatbush Shomrim Executive Coordinator Bob Moskovitz in a short statement to YWN praised the Shabbos patrol for their hard work every week. “This week it was two arrests, last week they assisted with a Pikuach Nefesh of a young sick child. It’s every single week that our team of professionals work closely with the NYPD in making arrests and keeping the community safe – in many different ways. We are thrilled with the partnership we have with the NYPD, and want to publicly thank the members of our Shabbos patrol”. The NYPD lauded Flatbush Shomrim in multiple tweets sent out by the Department: Just before midnight on Friday, officers from the @NYPD70Pct responded to a burglary call in Brooklyn. With the assistance of @FlatbushShomrim, the officers were able to make two arrests, including a career criminal who is on parole with an active warrant. https://t.co/6xdYSPY0Be — NYPD NEWS (@NYPDnews) January 15, 2023 (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

SCAM ALERT: Flatbush Shomrim Warns Residents of New Brazen Fraud Attempt [VIDEO]

Flatbush Shomrim is warning residents of a brazen new scam in which people come knocking directly at your door and claim to be city workers attempting to prevent scams, all in an attempt to get hold of personal and sensitive information they can then exploit. Shomrim said they responded to an incident in which a scammer showed up to a resident’s door with one of the inhabitant’s name and bank and proceeded to push for further information. The fraudster insisted that she was from NYC’s Department of Aging which she claimed was notified by the bank about suspicious activity on the resident’s associated account. Flatbush Shomrim reached out to NYC’s Department of Aging, which confirmed that no such program exists and that the incident was indeed a scam. Shomrim is now alerting residents of Flatbush and beyond to never allow an unidentified person into her home, even if they’re claiming to be helping you and has some of your personal information. Ocean County Corrections PBA, Shomrim, Police Team Up at Lakewood Carasaljo [PHOTOS]

Approximately one dozen people led by Ocean County Corrections PBA 258 gathered Friday at Lakewood’s Lake Carasaljo to clean and beautify the area, clearing garbage, debris, and even discarded bikes and tires from one of the town’s most popular recreational spaces. PBA officials were joined at the cleanup by additional volunteers from the Lakewood Civilian Safety Watch, National Chaplains Association, and the Lakewood Police Department’s Water Rescue and Bike Units, whose officers joined in the endeavor after concluding unrelated training at the lake. The effort, organized and led by PBA 258 president Matthew Stillwell and Rebecca Roth, was the first in a planned series of events and activities by PBA 258 to “give back” to the communities it already serves with distinction. As the state delegate for PBA 258, Ms. Roth says officials are always searching for ways to connect with the community on a more personal level and extend their efforts to residents of the region they serve, including in ways that are beyond the scope of their official duties. “Life can often be trying, and it can be hard to find the good on some days. But when you can’t find the good, be the good. Today’s cleanup was just a small measure of that guiding philosophy,” Roth said. “Unlike other agencies, residents don’t see us on their streets and don’t know us. Efforts like today’s is part of our efforts to break down those walls of anonymity,” she added. Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles said it was heartening to see the efforts PBA 258 and the other volunteers extended to beautification of the township’s lake. “It is always gratifying to see folks getting together to improve conditions in town, especially in helping to clean around one of Lakewood’s crown jewels, Lake Carasaljo,” said Mayor Coles. “I want to extend the thanks of the Township Committee and all residents of Lakewood to the Corrections Department PBA 258 for volunteering their time and efforts today.” Lakewood Committeeman Albert Akerman noted how the PBA officials were taking off of their personal time to assist a community it serves. “The cleanup is a really nice gesture by the Department of Corrections,” said Lakewood Committeeman Albert Akerman. “These officers work hard all week and chose to spend some of their time off beautifying our lake, rather than taking a break and relaxing. It’s truly inspiring and speaks to their level of dedication to the community.” Ocean County Corrections PBA 258’s officials insist, however, that they are only doing what they love – lending a hand to the people that rely on them. “There is nothing more rewarding than the Ocean County Corrections PBA 258 giving back to the people and community of Lakewood and Ocean County,” said Ocean County Corrections Warden Joseph Valenti. “We strive to do whatever we can for the people of Lakewood and Ocean County; there isn’t much we find more fulfilling and true to the fundamental principles of our jobs.” (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Flatbush Shomrim Busts 4 Thieves With DOZENS Of Stolen Packages, Van; Urges Community to Be Vigilant [VIDEOS & PHOTOS]

Flatbush Shomrim is warning NYC residents to be vigilant of packages arriving to their homes, as the organization has been inundated with calls relating to stolen boxes and packages in recent weeks. In one instance, Flatbush Shomrim received multiple calls on Monday afternoon of packages being stolen in the area of Ave. W and East 3rd St. An eyewitness to the thefts managed to snap a photo of the van being used by at least some of the suspects who were stealing packages, and Shomrim distributed the photo to its patrol members. At approximately 1:30 am Tuesday morning, Shomrim members on night patrol spotted the vehicle in question parked in the area of Ave. P and Ocean Parkway. A cursory look inside the vehicle confirmed to the members that it was indeed the one they were looking for, as it contained multiple packages and Amazon boxes which were presumably stolen. Shomrim volunteers staked out the area for over an hour before observing two individuals holding additional packages entering the van and driving off. Shomrim immediately activated the NYPD, who performed a traffic stop on the vehicle on Quentin Road and East 2nd Street, during which time police searched the van and found it laden with dozens of stolen boxes and packages. Additionally, the NYPD found that the van itself was a stolen vehicle. The two individuals were arrested and are facing charges. In a second incident just a few hours later, Flatbush Shomrim received a hotline call reporting a package being stolen on Ave. Y and East 3rd Street on Tuesday morning. Responding members observed two individuals carrying stolen packages in the area and the members immediately activated the police who responded to the scene, stopped the suspects, and took them into custody. Shomrim reminds everyone to keep their eyes out for arriving packages and to take them indoors as soon as possible. It is also crucial that the police be notified if a package is stolen, because if Shomrim spots the suspects, the perps cannot be arrested unless there is an open police report on them. If you see a package being stolen, call 911 and Flatbush Shomrim’s 24/7 Emergency Hotline 718-338-9797 (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Urgent Message From BP Shomrim after National Grid Employee Robs Home

Shomrim of Boro Park is urging residents to be vigilant of their valuables following a disturbing incident on Tuesday that was thankfully resolved with their assistance. According to Shomrim sources who spoke with YWN, a frum home in Boro Park was visited on Tuesday by a legitimate National Grid employee who was conducting routine and required inspections. After the female inspector left the home, the homeowner made a startling discovery – her pocketbook was missing. She immediately phoned Shomrim and apprised them of the situation, who sent units to respond to the scene. After initial fact-gathering, Shomrim members determined that the pocketbook was most likely stolen by the inspector. Shomrim phoned a high-ranking supervisor within National Grid and sent additional units to canvass the area in search of the inspector. Following a short search, the inspector was located several blocks away and, as presumed, was in possession of the stolen pocketbook. Shomrim notified the NYPD, who responded to the location and arrested the thief/inspector, and returned the pocketbook to its rightful owner. In the wake of this incident, Shomrim is urging everyone to be careful when allowing National Grid or other companies’ employees into your home. Keep valuables hidden and keep a watchful of the inspector’s actions. While the employees may be in your home legitimately, they may not always be the most upstanding citizens, and being cognizant of that could save you a lot of money and heartache. CROWN HEIGHTS: Jewish Man Fights Off Attempted Gun-Point Mugging; Shomrim And NYPD Respond

A young Jewish man was the victim of an apparent attempted robbery Tuesday morning on Montgomery between Kingston and Albany in Crown Heights, when three black males approached the victim and brandished a gun. According to YWN sources, no words were exchanged between the aggressors and their victim, likely because the victim began fighting back before they could make their demands. Surveillance footage provided to YWN of the incident shows the Jewish boy wearing a hoodie and backpack as the three black males exit a Honda vehicle and approach him. The victim walked past the perps and, after running up to the victim, one of the males tapped him and displayed a firearm. The boy instinctively began fighting back, scaring off the trio, who went back to the vehicle and drove off. Crown Heights Shomrim and the NYPD arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and are now searching for the suspects. As per the NYPD, the license plate does not match the car that was used in the incident, thus complicating search efforts. The victim was thankfully not injured in the incident. Shomrim are currently searching the streets for additional security-camera footage to be able to assist the NYPD with their investigation. If you have any information which can assist the investigation, please call 911 and the Crown Heights Shomirm 24 hour emergency hotline at 718-774-3333. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

High Level Israeli Officials Meet with Flatbush Shomrim, Hoping to Score Practical Advice [PHOTOS]

(By Sandy Eller) A group of more than 40 senior Israeli officials met with members of Flatbush Shomrim in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon, hoping to gain insights that will benefit them on their home turf. The meeting was arranged by Moshe Samuels, creator of The New Jew, an Israeli documentary that cast the media spotlight on American Judaism. Having filmed a segment of the series in Brooklyn in conjunction with Flatbush Shomrim in the pre-COVID days, Samuels reached out to Shomrim executive coordinator Bob Moskovitz to arrange a fall visit with the Israeli Local Authorities group, which was comprised of mayors, city council members and directors of regional and local councils. The delegates were an extremely diverse group, representing Israel’s Jewish, Muslim and Druze observant and secular communities, their visit to New York providing them with an opportunity to learn more about Jewish life in the United States. “When I received the email, I was actually very flattered that they were reaching out to us and at the same time curious what wisdom we could impart,” Moskovitz told Yeshiva World News. “They wanted to see what it is we do, what our relationship with the police department is like, to know how we face with anti-Semitism today and to hear about hate crimes against Jews so that they could go back to their municipalities and see if there was anything they could build on.” The meeting was held at Congregation Shaare Shalom on Avenue S, with approximately a dozen Flatbush Shomrim members also in attendance. Moskovitz, his fellow coordinators Steve Weill and Naftali Rosenberg all addressed the group, explaining how Shomrim works and the scope of its operations. Expounding on that theme, Moskovitz discussed some of the differences between Israel’s Civil Guard and Shomrim – while both are focused on security, Shomrim’s broad array of services also includes dealing with missing persons and domestic issues, gathering video footage to help fight crime, delivering oxygen concentrators during COVID and helping with storm relief after Hurricane Sandy. “We explained how callers are happy to work with us because we have a warm Jewish heart,” said Moskovitz. “These people are our brethren and we care and they know that.” The meeting also included a visit to Shomrim’s mobile command center, which in addition to being called into service to locate missing persons, is also deployed to act as a deterrent in high crime areas, sometimes by NYPD request. One question raised by the Israeli delegates was how Flatbush Shomrim makes arrests. “We told them that in Israel, the Civil Guard can do that, but we don’t do that here,” said Moskovitz. “We wanted to impart to them that we are not vigilantes – we follow the letter of the law, which is why the NYPD and local precincts work with us.” The meeting ended on a positive note, with both sides feeling that it had been a successful afternoon. “When they left, we got a lot of ‘kol hakavods’ and pats on the back,” said Moskovitz. “They were very impressed and considering that there a lot of patrols and a lot of organizations here in Flatbush we were honored that they asked to meet with us.” Photo Credits: Lensky Photo (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)
