Dear Parents,

We were informed today, that two students, one in the High School, and one in the Elementary School, have been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus, commonly known as “swine flu.” Although, Baruch Hashem, neither case is serious, we have decided to close school this coming Tuesday and Wednesday so as to minimize the spreading of the virus.

If you suspect your child is getting the flu, you should take your child to see a physician for an accurate diagnosis. Flu-like symptoms include: fever (over 100 degrees F.), feverishness, cough, sore throat, runny nose, or stuffy nose.  Additional symptoms may be experienced with swine flu, including muscle pain, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea.

It is important to teach your children how to reduce their risk of getting the flu and protect others from infection.

-Teach your children to wash their hands often.  Washing with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds is ideal.  Teach your children the proper use of hand sanitizer. Gels, rubs, and hand wipes all work well, as long as they contain at least 60% alcohol.  Hand wipes must be disposed of properly.  Always read and follow label instructions when using hand sanitizer.

-Teach your children to keep their hands away from their face and avoid touching their mouth, nose, or eyes.  Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of their elbow.  Cough or sneeze into your sleeve—not your hands!

-Help your children to learn these healthy habits by setting a good example and always doing them yourself.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our children healthy.

Mr. Richard Altabe (Principal, High School)
Rabbi Dr. Baruch Hilsenrath (Principal, Elementary School)

  1. Serious question here, maybe someone can help me with an explanation.

Each year statistics show that many hundreds of people die from flu like symptoms. This flu (swine) has to date caused two deaths in the USA. What is the real issue here that this Country is in such a frenzy? I am truly looking for an answer that makes sense.

  2. #7. I asked the same question to people in the health care industry. The answer seems to be that seasonal flue
s are confined to specific regions, whereas the “swine flu” is breaking out in numerous locations throughout the world, making it a pandemic. It isn’t stronger than other strains of the flu, but there isn’t vacanation yet, and it is spreading much more than other flus.

  3. Comment on #4: Do you personally know the children infected? It seems like a major generalization to say “these are all people that go away for pesach”.

I’m not a doctor, but from what I understand the fatality per infection rate for H1N1 worldwide (especially Mexico) has been very high as compared with other strains. Even in the US – 2 or 3 deaths per 500-1000 people with the swine flu is a very high number – compare with hundreds of deaths every year out of MILLIONS who catch the “regular” flu strains.

Combine this with the fact that there is no protection yet from a vaccine – so those already at risk (infants, pregnant women, elderly, people with compromised immune systems) who otherwise would take a flu shot have no options.

Reason for a panic? Of course not. But it’s a serious situation.

  5. FIRST OF ALL-NOT EVERYONE GOES AWAY FOR PESACH, MAYBE 10-15% OF THE FAMILIES GO AWAY & THEY DON’T GO TO MEXICO CITY WHERE THE FLU EPIDEMIC BEGAN.
SECOND- THE FLU CAN NO LONGER BE CONTAINED! IT IS NO LONGER RELATED TO MEXICO.
PLEASE KEEP UP WITH CURRENT EVENTS BEFORE MAKING UNINFORMED COMMENTS AND DON’T STEREOTYPE.

  6. 7, you make a good point and I am not belitting the fact that anyone got sick or died. They are making a big to do about this because this is the way Obama will show that HE needs to put his socialized medical program in place. As the socalist saying goes, “Never waste a good crisis!”

  7. To 12.,
Ignore 26 estates, he is just a rabble rouser looking to create some controversy. BTW, any flu is dangerous, but B”H there are vaccines every year to deal with that year’s probable strains. Like I posted before H1N1 flu is responsible for the killer Spanish flu of 1918. 26 estates probably works for the gov.; they also don’t take any contaigous illness seriously (eg. AIDS).

  8. Please go to the CDC site (I realize that the editors will not post the site’s address in here, I’ve tried already), and get the facts about how to sanitize your homes and selves. There is a webpage on proper protocol for protection against this flu!

If [you] employ nannies and housekeepers THEY could be the problem! Please have your employees follow sanitation procedures.

Teach your kids to wash their hands frequently, have them play a game; cleaning up surfaces that are vectors for flu bugs, doorknobs, phones, fridge door handles, (yeah, things you don’t think about)…I know it sounds trite, but it does help.

Refuah Sheleymah to all the Cholim…

  9. we hope and pray. if someone has realized Hashem is showing us these hardships now because nows the time Hashem wants you to pray to Him and become stronger and more close to him. In a lot of communities we here not such great things happening and hopefully those not such great things should end and ‘MASHIACH will come bimhera beyamenu………AMEN!!!
