Another day, another black man killed by police. Thoughts?

Absolutely terrible, if the facts pan out as the media claims. That is what investigations are for, but there should be a thorough one to see if the do.

If Trump had half a brain, he would take the victim’s side before Hillary does, even conditionally so that he could back out if the facts clear up. Fits perfectly into the “system is rigged” viewpoint.

He doesn’t have half a brain.

Every killing should be investigated by the state that their in.

It doesn’t matter what color the victim is or what color the cop is.

This situation that the Feds are getting involved right away is basically racism!

If the state finds a case of violation of s/o’s rights, then the Feds should get involved.

This country used to be a country based on laws, not on politics!

Really, sir? Someone driving with a busted taillight is a criminal that requires shooting?

This has to be one of the absolute worst things I ever read on these boards.

Wolf, you completed the investigation to conclude that the guy wasn’t a criminal and wasn’t stopped for a reason greater than a broken taillight and that he complied with the lawful orders of the officer who stopped him?

Or, perhaps, Mr. Wolf (see, I’m not calling you Rabbi) you simply ate up everything the media fed you on this story, wholesale, as well as that so-called girlfriend whose first reaction before the smoke of the gun cleared was to whip out a smartphone, startup some streaming app and begin filming a video of her injured but not yet dead boyfriend, falsely narrating that he’s dead and whatever other figments of her wild imagination conjured up rather than rendering assistance, requesting medical attention or cooperating with law enforcement officials – all the while her “friend” lay bleeding beside her.

While neither of us know much details on a case that is hardly 24 hours old, and the OP referenced multiple cases (“another”), what we do know from the earlier cases is that almost every one of these #blacklivesmatter police shootings involved a career criminal not complying with orders from a law enforcement officer, usually after being stopped for actual or suspected criminal behavior.

Not complying does not give the police the right to kill him. Police do not have the right to kill people.

popa, I agree. My primary point is to push back against the immediate blame-the-police mentality of these protesters. If the officer is at fault, he should fully be held to account.

Police tend to beat up criminals regardless of race. Sometimes they beat up an innocent person. It is to the credit of the African American community that they complain, even though they are also the most likely to be victims of crime. When crime was a big problem among American Jews (in the era of the “horse poisoners guild”-they offered to protect your horse for a fee), we basically threw the Jewish criminal under the bus – when they got killed or executed they would have trouble getting a minyan for the funeral.

“you completed the investigation to conclude that the guy wasn’t a criminal”

You completed the investigation, served as a grand jury to indict him for a death penalty offense, served as a trial jury to try him and convict him, and approved a death penalty.

Had he been a frum Jew rather than an African American the entire Jewish community in America would be up in arms.

Well I push back against the immediate blame-the-victim mentality of people like you!

(FWIW I have publicly called out some of their leaders of the BlackLivesMatter movement over their praise for a convicted cop killer who is now a fugitive in Cuba. But that doesn’t doesn’t mean the problems they are complain about aren’t real. And you are an example of the problem.)

charlie, wolf, and rebyidd: The facts of the case in Minnesota so far seem to be that he told the police he had a (legal) gun. Protocol in such a case is to keep your hands in plain sight until the police have inspected your license and secured the weapon until they are done dealing with you. He, for whatever reason, thought he should get his registration before the cops told him to. The cop shot him as soon as his hand entered his bag, which is exactly what police are supposed to do in this situation.

The case in Louisiana seems much more clear-cut and, unless some new evidence comes out, those police officers will actually spend a long time in jail for murder.

I don’t have a problem with waiting to see what the facts are. It’s the people who have preemptively branded the shooting victims as criminals that I have a problem with. If someone in this thread had not made his comment that the people involved were criminals (and, by implication, that the shootings were justified), I probably would not have said anything either.

    Sam2,

If that is “what police are supposed to do in this situation” there is a serious problem with police protocol. That’s a shoot first and ask questions later philosophy which unnecessarily gets people killed. How many people who are planning on shooting cops tell the cops in advance that they have a legal gun? Also it is very likely that the cop asked him for his license and registration already, that is the first thing they ask for. The cop panicked and a man is dead. It is incredibly tragic.

I don’t think, however, that this is racial thing except for maybe in the sense that blacks get pulled over more. There are too many cops around for all of them to be good at their jobs and there are plenty of unarmed white (and other races) people that get killed by cops as well. But there is definitely a perception out there that this happens only to black people or at least far more frequently to black people. It is this perception that has fueled violence against police, creating a cycle of violence where the police are more nervous and therefore more likely to kill people.

Perhaps you should focus less on “pushing back against” mindsets you disagree with and focus more on the facts. There is no evidence that the man shot was a criminal, and certainly no evidence that he was currently engaged in any criminal activity, forget about criminal activity that would warrant being shot to death.

    Sam2:

Funny, I thought the exact opposite. In Louisiana, two officers were in middle of a struggle with a black man that somebody had reported was brandishing a gun; it is somewhat understandable why the officers would feel threatened.

But in Minnesota, the preliminary reports seem to show a different picture. This guy was sitting in his car after being pulled over for a busted taillight, and the officer asked him for his license and registration. While reaching for his license, as the officer had told him to, he mentioned that he had a firearm. (Which was probably not the best timing for that statement.) The officer responded by firing four shots while screaming “Don’t move!” Now, the devil here is in the details about whether the officer yelled “Don’t move!” first or shot first. But either way, I don’t think the officer should have felt a need fire in this case, certainly seeing as he had just instructed this man to take out his license.

Now, I don’t think that there is any evidence that racism played a role here; but it does seem that these cops were a little too trigger-happy on what should have been a routine traffic stop.

I actually watched part of the clip now. It seems like the police officer is more upset about the shooting than the girlfriend. He’s saying “I told him not to reach for it”. I also wonder if there was some conspiracy here with the #blacklivesmatter movement. To me it looks like that should not have been a fatal shot. Why was the hospital unable to save his life? If Phiandro Castile would still be alive I don’t think this story would even make the news. I think someone wanted to be sure it becomes a national topic.

mw13 and iacisrmma: Yes, and the protocol is that they clear the car, person by person, to avoid anyone potentially reaching for the weapon. He should not have reached for anything until the car was clear.

The Louisiana case he was already subdued and on the ground. There was no need to shoot him, even though he had a gun in the back of his waistband.

Mostly it’s from the officer saying on video “I told him not move!” But yeah, some of it is from her (like that there were four shots fired). Not that I’m taking this as Torah MiSinai, just that this is how the story is currently being told – it may very well change.

Next time don’t swallow the media’s narrative wholesale all at once. Not only “it may very well change”, it will change. The media has no chezkes kashrus. Especially on these type of issues where they have a sordid history of getting it very wrong and biasing their coverage in an anti-police inclination favoring these #blacklivesmatter thugs, who themselves have a history of supporting cop-killers.

We now have word for the MN officer’s lawyer that a) he was pulled over for more than simply a taillight violation and b) he failed to comply with the officer’s order when reaching into his pocket. We also do not know if he had a license to carry a firearm, other than the so-called girlfriend’s claim he did.

IDK who Sen. Scott is, and I don’t care about what he said!

There definitely is racism across the board, from the left to the right.

Where is the problem and where should we start?!?

If the police are the problem, it’s not where we should start!

I posted this in the other topic:

“We should start with Obama’s hometown (Chicago).

Here are the stats for this year, so far, in homicide:

    Victim Assailant

    Black 263 46

    Hispanic 60 16

    White/Other 17 2

    Police – 4

    No Arrest – 270″

So you see – the cops only killed 4 guys.

    But they’re 263 black victims!

So it’s obvious that the cops aren’t doing their job of catching bad guys!

It’s also obvious that most homicides are committed by blacks!

So now we see, plain as daylight, where the problem lies, and it’s Not with the cops!
