Meet The New 50 Shekel Note

50

President Reuven Rivlin on Wednesday, 15 Elul was presented with Israel’s new 50 shekel note, which is described as using the most advanced technologies available to prevent counterfeiting. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Bank of Israel Governor Karnit Flug presented the new bill at a press conference.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “In order for this note to retain its value, we must guard both security and the economy. I very much appreciate your seriousness and professionalism and of the Bank of Israel staff in maintaining the stability of the Israeli economy. This is one of our two missions. We must increase the security budget due to Operation Protective Edge and guard the economy, and these items meet in the deficit which we can control and which will not topple us. This will be our policy and thus we will act, together.”

Dr. Flug replied, “I am pleased to hear these remarks and I thank you. The new NIS 50 note bears the likeness of Shaul Tchernikovsky. It is unique both in its design and in its security technology, among the most advanced in the world. I thank the Prime Minister for supporting the process and am pleased to present the new 50 NIS note to the citizens of Israel.”

The bill is green in color, strikingly similar to the current 20 NIS note. Undoubtedly this will lead to confusion in the marketplace as the current 50 shekel note, the one being phased out, is purple.

At first I thought to myself, Is that the way to honor the great Torah personalities whom we want to exalt – by putting their faces on money bills??
But then I remembered the medrash which says that Avraham Avinu minted coins with his own picture on one side and Sara Imeinu’s picture on the other.
