US Intelligence Official: Iran Involved in Fight Against IS

isisAmerica’s top intelligence official says Iran is involved in the fight against the Islamic State group in Iraq.

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper says Tehran has “a very robust commitment to the fight” and has people there in an advisory capacity.

In an interview broadcast Tuesday on CBS, Clapper says the Iranians have “brought in large amounts of weaponry” to Iraq.

Clapper also says Iran already has the “technical competence” to make a nuclear weapon and a decision will be up to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Clapper tells CBS “it’s a political decision for them” and predicts Iran “will maintain the expertise and the capability in all the realms” to produce such a weapon.

Khamenei has said Iran would accept a “fair and sensible” outcome of nuclear talks.

  1. This explains Obama’s (and the Democratic party’s) position on Israel. The US (correctly) sees Islamic State as the leading threat to American interests in the region (e.g. they want to conquer all the oil producing areas and use them for blackmail). While Iran is an annoyance to several Muslim allies of the US (e.g. Saudi Arabia), Islamic State is a direct threat.

The Democrats do not want to get involved in foreign wars (“quagmires as they call them – note that if the 21st century Democrats were in charge in 1941, we would be long gone as the occupant in the White House would be someone appointed in Berlin). Therefore the US wants to take advantage of Iran’s willingness to fight Islamic State, even if they have to discomfort Israel and most the US’s Arab friends. Afterall, what harm would a nuke on Tel Aviv due if it saves American lives and avoids having to force the US to spend money on defense.
